Is GH60 still relevant for building new Keyboards?
« on: Tue, 24 December 2024, 14:52:16 »
Hello,

I am looking to design a PCB with

1. Hall-Effect Keys
2. Wireless Connectivity
3. USB-C with USB 2.0 of High Speed (8K polling), and
4. Screw In Stabs

(For those who are curious, I am planning to use ZMK with ZMK Studio for firmware and configurator)

I like GH60 layout, but the most recent projects built on it are at last 5-7years old.

Is there a natural successor to GH60 layout, or GH60 is still relevant to design new PCBs?

There's nothing wrong with the GH60, it's an open source design you can start from to add what you want (and it spawned a ton of spinoffs), we have people using (nearly) 40 year old keyboards that work just fine.

As for what you want though the GH60 is a good starting point for a design, which is why so many used it but in your case you're going to have to redesign almost ALL of it. Unlike mechanical switches hall effect switches require power at each switch, also the GH60 was never wireless, nor did it have 8k polling. By the time you're done the only  thing you're going to use is a few traces and the pcb shape which is a good start but there won't be much left by the time you're done.

If you can find a microcontroller with all of:
 • USB 2.0 "High Speed", and
 • Wireless ability of any kind, and
 • ZMK support
Then please let me know!
