Leopold Brown's tactility mushy?
« on: Sun, 08 May 2011, 10:16:44 »
Hey, I have heard a few reports that compared to other cherry boards, the Leopold's felt a little softer (and less tactile).  Anybody have any experience with multiple cherry brown boards and able to give a solid comparison between the two?  I can't really feel the tactility of my Leopold brown when i type fast but I am not sure if that is just how browns are until you get used to them or if the Leopold's have a mushier actuation point.

That makes no sense. Same switch. The only "mushy" part of Leopolds may be the stabilized keys, which are Cherry Style, and some say those are mushier. Seems to me that most geekhackers prefer the Costar-style ones. I say don't sweat it over stabilizers. There are many things more important when you buy a kb. :)

But I'd think that the plunger mechanism is really good at not binding with keypresses that are off-center.

That's not totally absurd though, right? Over the years, the plastic may have changed a bit....?
But if you take a Filco and a Leopold, both new, I wouldn't expect to feel much of a difference. Unless, you know, one has reds and the other has blues. >:D

Oh dear, you just got yourself an awful mech keyboard that is mushy like the rubber dome. What a waste of money.

My Leopold's (both brown switches) feel different than my Filco with brown switches.  They do feel like they have a little less of a bump to them.  Only thing that's really different between the two is the key caps.
Filco Majestouch 104 Cherry MX Black; Filco Majestouch 87 Ninja Cherry MX Brown; Filco Majestouch Indigo Blue 104 Cherry MX Brown; Filco Majestouch 2 104 Cherry MX Red; Leopold 87 Otaku Cherry MX Brown; Leopold 87 Cherry MX Brown; Razer Black Widow Ultimate

I did hear from Korean webistes that leopold and filco do feel different. It's because of the stablizers and the board.
Filco feel more firm and sturdy when typing. The keycaps wobble less too.
Leopold feels more like a toy and make more that plastic sound when typing and in build quality.
That doesn't mean leopold has less build quality. Some ppl actually prefer Leopold more because of that particular parts I pointed out.
But in the switch wise, the mushy and brown feeling like that should be similar which brand it is.

I dont know know but often times I find my Filco Browns to feel linear. The only Time i can even feel the bump is if I press the key slowly looking for the bump. On the other hand, the tactile feel on the blues is well, as tactile as a cherry switch can get.

I just think it's how the browns are.

It also depends on how old said switches are.
A vintage, worn-out MX11800 with browns will most likely not feel like a brand new Filco/Leopold/whatever.

What should we call something underneath control, shift and return key?
I have called them stabilizers...

Indeed they are almost linear. Cherry should made Black, blue and ergoclears or red blue and ergoclears as main options. Browns and plain clears are both pointless options.

Those are just regular switches without any additional stabilizer unlike the case of spacebar.

Actually I have not any Realforce, but at least 87U seems to have stabilizers on space, shifts, enter, backspace key.
And I'm sure that my HHKB pro has them only on space, left shift and return key.

You should ask for a refund, a stabilizer on a topre board is worth 15$

Btw check the back side of the topre keycaps! There is no room for the stabilizer.
You can install them just like a regular switch.

I presume you are speaking about two different boards/generations.

You can install the key just like a regular one, even thogh the key have a stabilizer.
Topre stabilizers exists underneath the switch case, you can't see them without taking apart completely.

I have taken it apart. It indeed has.
That's very clever stabilizer implementation of Topre.
