Geekhack decides what i spend my winnings on!
« on: Mon, 01 August 2011, 18:23:13 »
Hey guys so i recently won 35 bucks in a local sc tourney and I need to decide what to buy with it. It is in the form of a best buy gift card, I want a new mouse pad so I was wondering if anyone could recommend one. I was looking into the razer vespula if that matters at all.

depending on what size mousepad you want, i love the steelseries qck line (i have a mini and a regular), just the right amount of static friction/ lack of kinetic friction, plus they are pretty inexpensive (on amazon atleast) just don't buy the one with the graphics on them (like the wow ones or sc2 ones or this happens)

Kinda hard to give advice with such little info(preference of glide etc.etc.) plus it's a bit harder to suggest to RTS than it is to FPS due to the way you use the mouse.

Previous post on the artisan pads and a small review of the shiden-kai with pics

Hein=rougher(some have mentioned aggravation on their wrist due the surface), Shiden=smooth, and Shi-Kai=slightly faster glide than shiden. Apparently difference in the glass amount of glass.

I'm really not sure if I should suggest them as most of the information comes from FPS gamers. Plus they are generally more expensive than what is normally sold. Though considering your an RTS player and generally RTS use a higher sensitivity; the small one isn't as expensive and it's size is around a tiny bit smaller than the Icemat-2. Only real negative I can see is the fact you can't roll them, well if your careful you can but it can damage the material and if your planning on going to LAN you might need to keep it inside a some binding or protective cover.

There's a lot more mousepads out there but you'll most likely run into the same companies all the time, not that they are all bad just some aren't what people are wanting to use nor should be recommended for that particular game or way of using the mouse. But then again a lot of people ask too vaguely and they just get the general lot rather than the specific one.

Isn't that obvious?

Direct from their site or amazon though you might need to check specifically if they have the one you want(size, variant).

I would second the Qck mouse pad. I use one here for my Xai and have to say that it is the best pad I have ever used.
The mouse feels like it floats on the surface. I have a standard size Qck in black. It sticks to the desk a treat and is very thin so you don't get the lift off problems that you do with some of the thicker soft pads.
It does take a while to flatten out from new though as it comes rolled up. They also like to collect particles so I use a magic lint brush to clean mine now and again.
