First Mechanical Keyboard help
« on: Mon, 13 February 2012, 13:18:58 »
Hey! First time poster here. After browsing for quite some time I decided to make and account and ask for some advice as to what keyboard will be able to suit my "needs".

I am a avid Starcraft player, I do not play too many other games on my computer because it is not the greatest piece of equipment out there. But with that said, it does not mean that I won't get a new computer in the new future. Anyways, I have not been able to find the right keyboard that can fit what I am looking for. I really want to have a back light on the keys, I really like being able to see my keyboard well because I tend to do a lot of computer work in the dark. Also, I am still unsure of what switches to get, I do like the sound of the blues, but am apprehensive to buy it for gaming because I have heard it can be poor for that. The browns or clears seem like a good choice otherwise. Any advice on the switches would be greatly appreciated.

So, I am not looking to spend a whole lot on the keyboard, but am open to ideas if it seems what I would like. Prettywell just want backlit keys and a relatively good price.

Thanks in advance!

If you like the sound of blues, get them.  Don't listen to the 'blues aren't for gaming crowd', although I personally wouldn't use blues for gaming lol.  From the top of my head, the only backlit blues I can think of that's readily available are the Blackwidow Ultimates.  Also, the price is decent.

I think the actuation/force only really matters for FPS games where precision is necessary. SC should be pretty flexible in terms of switches like blues/browns.

Ducky keyboards cost twice as much, some are backlit and come in blues, but they are only PC compatible.

Best way to tell would be to try some of your friends' or display models to decide which you like.

Yeah, blues for gaming are quite good.
People say : blues arent for gaming, but I guess the people who say this are just gamers who dont like the clickiness of blues.

I have blues, and i really like them.
Blues are actually quite popular. You should start with blues, or browns (which dont have the clicky noise.

Perhaps check out Deck keyboards?  As for which switch type, you should decide if you really want a tactile feel or not.  Blues, clears, and browns have this, but blues have the clicky as well.  Deck has Clear switch models.

Doing computer work in the dark is not good for your eyes.  You can save $100 and get an Unicomp if you sacrifice the backlight.  These use buckling spring switches which are tactile and have a click. There is also the upcoming Cooler Master Storm QuickFire Pro which looks interesting.  It has a thread here.  It's only partially backlit though.  There will be a Cherry MX Blue, brown, red, and black model.
