QFR vs Quickfire TK?
« on: Sat, 24 November 2012, 02:06:51 »
So I'm basically deciding between one of these two keyboards for my first mech board.
I've read enough times that the QFR is a solid choice but I'm worried about the excessive branding. I am aware how CM has made newer models without so much branding but I'm worried that I won't be so lucky and get a branded one. The TK appeals to me but the only thing holding me back is the unknown reliability of the keyboard. So basically, should I risk buying the TK which may have inferior build quality than the QFR? If not, I'll hope I'm lucky with getting an unbranded QFR.

Other info:
Since I'm planning on upgrading my PC this Black Friday sale, I need an answer by the end of the 25th.
I'm open to other keyboard suggestions but it'd be nice if those keyboards are available on newegg since that's where I'll be getting all my components anyways.

Thanks for your help!

Cm is offering the qfr for half off ($40) right now. Honestly, I'd get that and if you don't like it, sell it. The link is the the "deals" section.
Looking for CC's!

Another interesting thing to note about the TK is that the modifiers (and possibly spacebar) look non-standard. So whether that's a drawback or not is probably up to you, which I suppose depends on whether you plan on changing the keycaps.

That said, the TK has one badass layout.

If you replace the keycaps, then the only branding you are going to see is the logo between Esc and F1, and the name between the arrow keys and the Ins/Home cluster.

And for $40 you can't go wrong.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I could get three with the price that it's here. US$ 140 here and still the cheapest keyboard available.

Though, it's better than paying US$ 300 on a bloody Razer Blackwidow Ultimate anyday.

I would but it seems like they only have the sale for the black switches and I think they're too stiff for me.

Yeah, black will be EOL. You will not see the QFR hit this price for any of the other switch types. Just FYI

Hmm, so, that's the reason why the Quickfire TK has no Cherry MX Black version...

I remember that the CM Storm Trigger also got bad feedback due to some users who bought the Cherry MX Black version and didn't like it... Although some people may like it,  now I understand what CM's trying to do...

we may keep limited qtys, but it will be exclusive to our CM store.

Keeping in mind this is regionally based. EU carries majority black switch

Australian stores seem to favour black switches in QFR (which are also the cheapest).

Please, tell the Brazilian CM Team to stop making the Quickfire Rapid is Cherry MX Black switches. There's way too many Cherry MX Black Keyboards here (Ozone Strike, Thermaltake Meka, Steelseries 6Gv2) and there are just about no good Cherry MX Brown/Red keyboards!

If you get logos you could always sand them off or paint your case...

and $40 is an absolute steal, when they were $60 w/ code people were jumping all over them

Hi Carter; I know this is not your job, but could you give me a D-Day for Europe too?

I mailed the customers service, and they answered me "shortly". Which is good, but not really what I expected  :p

Keycaps sets are rarely cheap, unless you are in on a large group buy.

Otherwise WASD sells various coloured sets, SP has a few sets, and there are a couple of GH members with online stores who also sell keycap sets (sometimes a bit more expensive, but much nicer).
