Cherry G80-1950PQAXB programming

I looked around for a bit and couldn't really find any information on programming this keyboard, so I figured I'd start a thread since I know a few other members have one as well, and it'll probably be of use to someone else somewhere down the line.

From what I read in a previous thread about one year old, the software only works with Windows XP.  Is that still true?  The compatibility list on Cherry's web site lists Windows 7, and the driver/service appear to have been installed (per device manager, services.msc), but I'm having trouble launching any kind of application which actually allows you to edit the key functions.  The keyboard does work, though.  The installed program folders only contain documentation, setup (to re/uninstall), and TestSuite which launches the JavaPOStester, but with no apparent method of remapping key functions.

Should I just try Cherry tools on the download page of another board?  It wasn't listed on this particular model's page.

I guess I could play around with this for a few hours and figure things out eventually, but for now, I defer to your expertise :)

Have you tried configuring it using USB passthrough and a Windows XP VM? (The built in Microsoft Windows XP mode should work fine for that.) Any logs or anything?

The software on Cherry site allows you to remap the function.
Under software downloads, look for G80-195X
As a SPOS keyboards, some keyboards are missing such as ~ and one other that i cant recall at the moment.

PS. I'm the owner of that pic

Wasn't sure if you took it or were reposting it, hence the source link :)

I installed the applications on the 195X page earlier today, but as I mentioned in the post, I couldn't find specifically where to remap key functions.  Is it a certain tab within JavaPOStester, or somewhere else?

I thought about using an XP VM if necessary, but hadn't taken it to that extent yet, but that would probably be the way to go if XP is still required since f' doing a full install of that.

Need to use Cherryconf 2.9 on 32bit Windows, XP strongly recommended but might work on 7 32bit. 64bit is no go as there is no 64bit driver version for direct hardware access. It need to be connected PS/2 natively on 32bit OS, can't program through a vm as they don't have direct hardware access, can't use PS/2 to usb adapter during programming.
Have an old PC laying about you can chuck 9x or XP on? Probably be best or find some friend or family member still running such to install Cherry conf on to program it. I always keep at least one legacy box operational. You never know when you might need it when dealing with vintage boards for testing purposes.

I did barely manage to get it to work on a 32 bit XP box after some dll replacements and such, but the programming utility is pretty terrible. Some keys couldn't be mapped quite right as I recall - I think it was the /? key or the `~ key... Basically, this needs a full controller replacement.

Yes Cherryconf suck, which was why it was replaced with Cherrytools. But, once you program it well, and are happy with it you are done and don't have to use that software ever again. I never program 1950, but other old keyboard that was not support in Cherrytools. I think maybe the G80-3181, or another similar model I had.

I completely reprogrammed my G80 1950 using Win XP 32 and it works fine. I would attempt to do it again to get all the keys remapped. The issue you're referring to is an issue with how the characters are displayed in the software, rather than the programmability of the keyboard itself.

If I remember correctly (and I haven't programmed my 1950 in a while now), you need to use the layout chart that comes with the keyboard as a reference. The screen that lets you select the keys to program by mouse click corresponds exactly to the layout chart that comes with the keyboard EVEN THOUGH THE SOFTWARE MISLABELS THE KEYS, SOME AS BLANKS AND SOME AS ERRONEOUS CHARACTERS.

I'm not sure the exact solution, because as I said it was a long time ago, but if you persevere with the hints I've given you I'm sure you'll figure it out. I definitely remember the paper chart being useful, and I definitely remember discovering that some keys were mislabeled in the software and thinking "this software is a POS" (not point of sale).
