Problem with Filco ANSI
« on: Sat, 05 January 2013, 04:42:49 »
Greetings and happy new year...

I have several Filco keyboards, all of them in ISO layout (105 keys), in different languages (English, German, Finnish, etc..). ISO keyboards work fine, whether connected via USB or PS/2.
I recently purchased an Filco ISO keyboard, because the combination: Cherry MX Blue + blank keys, was the only option available.
However, the keyboard has a strange behavior on my PC. If I connect it via PS/2, the keyboard just doesn't work (not recognized by BIOS and operating system). If I connect via USB, BIOS runs in "slow motion" (the keys take a while to answer), although in the operating system, it works perfectly (Windows XP).
Why does Filco keyboard has different behaviors in ANSI / ISO?

The keyboard also has other strange behaviors, for example, sometimes (connected via USB), when I start my computer, NumLock Led is on, but the keyboard doesn't respond. To get a response, I must disconnect it and reconnect.

Thank you for your help in advanced...

I think is merely defective, only a coincidence it is ANSI would have nothing to do with such problems.

Yeah, this is definitely a faulty keyboard presuming you've tried different USB ports.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Sorry that your first post is to report a problem (although you have a nice keyboard collection).

Make sure the cable is plugged in properly.
Try the keyboard on a different computer.
Is the Filco cable detachable?  If so, make sure it is securely plugged in (to the keyboard), and try a different cable.

It does sound a bit like a flaky USB connection, but might also be defective.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
