give Race some lovin
« on: Tue, 22 January 2013, 08:18:40 »
finally got my Race at a very good price. Blue MX, purple leds. I was skeptical about it because I read a lot of bad reviews here and I was expecting an overall low quality.

Compared to Filco it feels light and and cheap but I must say that I like it... a lot. PCB mounted switches are not that bad, the key press is a bit "softer", but still clicky on MX blue of course. I do not hammer on keys, so I can't really say that the PCB is flexing while typing.

I also like the slightly bigger arrow keys and the stabilizers. What I can't get used to is the very small right shift.

Anyway it's true that nobody can tell you if you are going to like a keyboard, you have to try it first hand.

I still can't find an alternative board that with the same compact layout, function keys, R5 row & backlit. Congrats for your new toy :)

I love mine, been using it daily since June!  Really wish that I could get a nice PBT key set for it though.
Currently GMMK Pro: lubed 68g U4T, FR4 plate, extra gaskets, etc

I didn't mind it at first.

However, all the random keycap sizes irks me greatly. It's so hard to get custom keycaps, and even if you can, the random number of keys just makes it so that you can never have it looking as good as say a poker/pure. But if you want to keep the stock keycaps, then this point is moot.

I also hate the lack of a backplate, and/or the lack of the option to buy a backplate for it.

But it is a nifty little board, and with blue's it would still be pretty clicky. But for red's, it isn't anywhere near as clicky as my Filco :(.

I also feel like the switch is going to just rip straight off the board whenever I try and remove a keycap. It just doesn't seem as solid as a Filco.

So it has its positives and negatives, and I am glad that for you, the positives outweigh the negatives =D. It is still a great board, just depends how picky you want to be with it :P

don't get me wrong... Filco is better :) just Race is not that bad as they picture it. With a little more standard key layout it could be a work keyboard for me. As it is now, it's more of a toy... but pretty nice nonetheless.

I still like mine, I just wish the finish was better on mine, and that keys were a more common size.

As for a plate, it would help, but it's not entirely needed, get an aluminum case and it might make the need for a plate irrelevent. That is the plan for mine.

Yeah true. I still prefer it to my Filco, just because of the size =D.
BUT, if Filco made a 60%, I would be all over it haha

if filco made a 75%...
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I think I read on a forum that it's rumoured to be true, but only time will tell :(
