WTB: Dolch Round ?
« on: Wed, 03 April 2013, 18:05:41 »

I'm basically looking for this set. I was told they were Dolch group buy of some sort and apparently there were different "rounds". I'm not sure of which round this is but I really like it! I dont need the number pad part as I have a TKL board. Please message me if you are willing to sell these!

Thanks!

Whenever Round4 finally finishes, there should be a surplus of Round3 style going around. Which I think is the same as Round1/2. Couldn't hurt to ask to take over someone's order for R4 maybe.

Good luck with your search!

What profile is that? I am only familiar with cherry profile and OEM. Whats so special about DSA? I can see why everyone wants these though, so retrochic! So how is round 4 going to be different?

Your pic is of Round 3 or 4 because the modifiers are ridiculous.

I don't see myself ever parting with my Round 1 set, but here is a picture of it in it's natural habitat so you can see the difference:

Spherical. When I see large centered legends, I think DSA/spherical. That's the only way I would want this set.

DSA is a low profile, uniform, spherical profile. It was offered recently in the DSA Retro group buy.

"Whenever Round 4 finally finishes...".  LOL.  It's only been since December 2011 that Round 4 "started closing".  To quote Winston Churchill, "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."  Or maybe it's the just the beginning of the end of the idea that Round 4 will ever end.  :(

Depending on if I like the orange and blue combo, I may have that available in a tkl version.  You know, whenever it gets finished and mailed to me.  Assuming we use keyboards still at that time and haven't advanced far beyond pedestrian peripherals.

Hahaha I can feel the rage inside of you all. TBH I cant really believe anyone would take the GB organizer seriously anymore if he/she let it go on this long. I would definitely be interested except I dont think I could ever bring myself to have orange/blue anything as an FSU student. =P

So in this group buy, were these offered only in DSA profiles? What about SA? SA seems to be around OEM hight, which is my preferred cap style, whilst still having that old-school spherical top.

the keys are in production right now. people take 7bit seriously because he's taken on the single biggest group buy in keyboard hobbyism, and has run plenty of other group buys.

there's no reason to speculate on his shortcomings... sure r4 has taken a while but i really don't blame anyone for that considering the massive scale of the buy and the fact that this is a real dude with a job who does this in his spare time.

capitalistix everything you could possibly want to know is on the DT wiki, go read up on the set if you have questions about it

I wasnt trying to diss him or anything. I didnt even know who it was, nor that it was the biggest group buy. I just personally have been strung along many times for many months on the interwebs with orders before so I probably would have lost faith by now. Hell, I'm kinda skeptical if I'll ever receive my sanctuary set at this point!

you should have gotten into round4, you had over a year... and you need to talk to 7bit about using the legends that you seem to think you are entitled to use for free as they were paid for by round4 (and previous roundX) participants...

i don't mean to be a grump but you know there is a lot more to running GBs using specific legends than you might think and a lot of work goes into the design behind the scenes for little to no remuneration.

Well, the Dolch/Skidata GB (non-DSA) was put on hold because sherryton was likely to release Dolch and Skidata on his site. However, sherryton has been MIA and there hasn't been mention of such sets since then. DSA profile Dolch would be really cool, though.

Calm down, buddy. No one is even talking about using 7bit's legends, I don't think. I believe we are saying that we would like a DSA profile set with large centered legends (WYSE, aka SP default) in the Dolch colorway. That's all. :)

Agreed, and I didn't realise that this was going on though DT... but that because I personally hate and really struggle with how the DT forums are laid out and set up, and as someone new 7bits threads can be pretty hard to follow...

thats why I never knew this GB was going on

i do not understand the drama on this thread. all I want is a badass dsa spherical dolch like keycap set. just like everyone else. I didnt get on 7-bits GB,  and that sucks but i don't see why we can't start another one here at geekhack. the people want what the people want.

credit can and should be given to anyone who runs it and helped designed whatever.

Has Round 4 finished yet?  Did I miss something?  Oh wait, nothing has happened.  Same thing, different day.  So I'm still waiting.   I've only been waiting for 515 days for my keycaps.  But it's cool.  The guy running this group buy is getting very little remuneration?  Really?  He was selling $5 keycap pullers for $30, as part of Round 4.  The last figure I saw for the gross revenue for Round 4 was over $150,000 (USD), and that was a year ago, so I wouldn't be so sure he isn't making some profits from Round 4.

Indeed, I am not sure why people are bent out of shape around waiting for round 4..I wasn't around for it and would like some keycaps. I would like the classic legends myself and would gladly contribute if people paid for another sort of legend. Nothing is free after all. I am sure round 4 was great, I wish I had been buying caps when it was on but as its done is it very harmful to have another run etc? If its 2013 and this closed in 2011 its surely ok to have a conversation about new keycaps.

well if you can find any place that i said you should not or can not run a group buy for these keys, i'll be pretty surprised. if people want them and there is no problems with legend usage then everything is hunky dory.

my point is just that legends cost money and they are not always just up for grabs after a specific group buy finishes them. there's a level of entitlement when it comes to others' work that should be checked on occasion -- we are a community and i really like that efforts to bring costs down for everybody can stem from individual projects, but the keyboard hobby community at large is still never going to be fully 'free' when it comes to design and resources. tread lightly :)

**** as long as we use any legend besides 'Deck' Keyboards i will be happy. oh and no comic sans.

are their places to buy legends? wouldn't people want to resell them to recuperate costs and time?

for the most part the dsa dolch with large center legends quest hasn't specified a specific legend. anything retro is good. **** we could just steal some styling off a old typewriter or something like that.

SP used to charge around $40 per legend (as in per key) for custom legends, but I think their prices went up. So you're looking at about $4500, split between all orders, to use anything other than SP's default legends.

DSA Retro used SP default (aka WYSE) legends, and I think those will look really good. It's also what MO1, Round 3, etc. have used.

SP also has a legend font called 'Isotherm' which is very interesting.

that legend is pretty cool. does SP charge for centering it and making it larger? are these legends interchangeable between the cap profile types?

jesus JD. $4500 for custom legends from SP? that is nuts. i am starting to understand the drama a bit more now.

isotherm looks pretty damn cool to me.

Do people use the tsangans from these sets for their Dolch sets?  If thats the case, they match very well for not being Cherry legends.

Not generally. Dolch has 7x spacebar and 1.5x mods already, so tsangan is not really needed. You would need a 2.25x right shift. Or a moogle, if you're adapting to a more modern board. But those were made specifically to match the Dolch sets, not taken from this set.
Oooh thanks for the info man.
