Noppoo choc mid 87
« on: Sun, 11 November 2012, 17:09:08 »
'sup folks.
Does anyone have that one?
The price and looks are interesting enough to make me start this post. Would love to hear some opinions about build quality, overall feeling, etc.

I am also extremely interested in this. Every other TKL has issues that stopped me from wanting to buy it. From too expensive, to low quality, to non universal keys, to over branding. This keyboard looks perfect.

I honestly don't why this Keyboard isn't more popular. people love the choc mini and people love TKL.

Because it's new and choc is not a mainstream brand.

It looks almost identical to a Filco or QFR or so. It does seem to be cheaper though.

"Looks" similar is not good enough. All TKL looks the same from the outside, more or less. There hasn't been any in depth review or a large enough user pool to comment about this keyboard yet. IMO, you need a complete teardown to look at the insides to tell if it's good quality or not. Also, Noppoo does not have the marketing power like CoolerMaster does. CM uses marketing from all gaming peripherals and computer hardware/accessories to also bring customers to their keyboards. Noppoo heavily depend on word-of-mouth to become popular, and that won't happen unless there are more reviews.

Can we really label this as cheap right now? I seem to remember people being very happy with the choc mini, and the choc 87 is more expensive than the Quick Fire right? I'm not saying necessarily that price determines quality, but it does lead you to believe that perhaps they aren't cutting costs all over the place and sacrificing their quality.

There just doesn't seem to be enough of a unique selling point to encourage people to try it out...I mean, the colored keycap printing is a little unusual, and it can do NKRO without needing PS/2, but these attributes just don't provide all that much differentiation. Especially now that QFRs are available with less branding and KeyCools are available with POM/PBT...

The main reason I'm interested in the Choc Mini is rather than the Quickfire or any TKL for that matter is because of the form factor. Those three extra keys aren't worth all the desk real estate that the arrow area of the keyboard requires. Having said that I am just a noob so I'm open to criticism.

This thread isn't about Choc Mini, but about Choc Mid, which has a regular TKL form factor.

Qtan does have it on his website

http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/item/shop-mechanical-keyboard-by-br/noppoo-mid-87-mechanical-keybo/lid=33508719

The keyboard seems to have (almost?) the same layout as the cm quickfire rapid. I am thinking about purchasing this keyboard (what a price!) and doing a review on it.

what do you guys think? You think its worth my money?

I am really disappointed with my Noppoo Choc Mini,  the feet are so uneven that it always wobbles.  Overall build quality is a bit shabby.  The color of the keycaps don't match exactly.  Now some may argue that these defects are de minimis, but to me they shout "poor manufacturing quality", and basically Noppoo is telling their customers that Noppoo has no pride whatsoever in their workmanship, their products, or their brand.  Honestly, I have no idea what the Noppoo Choc Mid 87 is like, but if it is made in the same factory as the Mini, I would not expect too much.  So, IMO $87 might be too high a price to pay honestly.  I would say Noppoo should consider a price closer to $30 as fair for their slipshod keyboards.

Nice to see some feedback on some very specific aspects. But saying it's only worth $30 is a bit extreme. The switches alone are worth more than that lol

So I guess QFR would still be a better choice over this one.
It's a damn shame you can't get one for anywhere near 100$-ish shipped to Europe.

Is this a black POM Choc Mini you have? There seems to be a quality difference between the black POMs and the white PBTs I've read in reviews.

Hi Guys

I'm still going back and forth between this Choc 87 and CM Storm Rapid or TK.

The thing that I most like to know about this Choc is this:

Are these keys lower than the other Mech keyboards or is that an optical illusion? If I look at the review of the Choc mini posted here I can clearly see it looks lower. If I look at the pictures of the 87 it looks similar.

As I have never been able to use a wrist wrest (it just .. argh, bugs me xd) this is a bit a concern for me. Can anyone tell me if these Noppoo keys are indeed easier to use over the higher normal mechanical keyboards like the CM Storm QF TK?

Thank you in advance!

*Note I currently own the newer version of the Noppoo Choc Mini. (Basically no red function keys on the right side of the board. Delete (Delete does have the Switch lock for Ctrl/Caps Lock switch) Home, PgUp, PgDown, and End, > key) I bought my Reds from Qtan and my Browns from Amazon. That came out confusing but just look for pictures of the newer and older version of the Choc Mini and you'll understand what I'm saying.

I also own the CM QF TK w/ Reds and have 2x CM QFR's w/ Reds/Browns coming anyday now. Have previously owned a Razer BWU 2013 and 4 Ducky Shine 9087's in all the flavors. I can say with with confidence that the QF TK's build quality is superior to the Choc Mini. The OEM for the TK just flat out made a better board. The only thing I don't really like about the TK is the keycaps. Definitely a weird shape and rather small even compared to Choc Mini. But other than that it's a really good solid keyboard that is a decent weight so it doesn't move and feels solid. The leg stands just flip out to on position but are fairly sturdy from what I can tell. Of course some of the larger keys like the Shift key are a teeny bit squishy but that's the cherry stabilizers (are not as squishy as the ones on my Ducky Shine 2 9087's.)

The Choc Mini is a great concept and overall is not that bad. I REALLY REALLY dig the Ctrl/Caps Lock swap for gaming. Amazing for MMO's like WoW. Has the standard Windows key disable function, NKRO (really overhyped since 99.9% of the time 6-key rollover is just fine.) I was also very surprised at how light the
Choc Mini is compared to other TKL keyboards. And I mean it's a LOT lighter compared to say a CM QFR.

The 2 main problems with the Choc Mini are the leg stands and certain keycaps. The legs themselves only have one fold out point. Basically you flip them out and that's it, no adjusting. They are cheap looking/feeling and are wobbly. I have that non-slip cloth  or whatever its called under mine so it stabilizes it. Also use a Ducky TKL hand rest which goes really well with this and other smaller boards. Now the main qualm I have with this keyboard is that certain keys ie Shift (both), Enter, Ctrl and Alt on left side, Caps Lock, and Tab are all barely lodged on the keyboard. If you press any of those keys anywhere but the middle of the key there is A LOT OF PLAY in the key. And I mean A LOT. The key basically tilts off the switch if you press on either side of the key. This is extremely annoying if you are spamming keys in a video game and really just shows shoddy workmanship. Also the space bar is very loose on the board and if it didn't have the metal bar stabilizers keeping it there I think it would just pop off. Now the things I mentioned are not game breakers. And it's weird because looking at all the other reviews/threads on GeekHack and elsewhere no one else has really mentioned anything that I've listed. I wouldn't say I'm going to return my Choc Mini's but I was a little disappointed when I started to use them. Might look into a Vortex KBT Race but I don't think it has media keys, windows key disable, or Caps Lock/Ctrl swap. Can anyone confirm any of those for me? Would greatly appreciate it.

Conclusion: Overall it's a pretty decent board with a few issues that if were fixed I think it would be a pretty awesome keyboard. I really love the layout of the board. I'd give the Choc Mini a 7.5/10 and the QF TK a 8.75/10

Hope this helps a little bit. Maybe if I stop being lazy I can make a video and illustrate exactly what I desribed. Meh...

That helps out lots!
Would still be hulpfull if anyone gets the 87 and can tell us if the build quality has improved.
But afaik it seems Choc is definitly the lesser in quality.
qTan also has the Key Cool which seems popular, but for that money I can just as well go for the TK.

I'll start looking around and try to find a good priced TK with Browns (not easy since it's not available in EU)

Thanks a lot!!

Just saw a new announcement on Noppoo's website...a white version is coming!

Says something about using both ABS and POM, though the machine translation isn't clear enough to be sure what they mean.

...and yes, the TANK is very nice. The combination of thick keycaps, a thick plate, and a wobble-free shell works quite well :-).

For anyone interested, I decided on the HPE 87 TKL instead because CM was too expensive to get in Europe. The HPE was quite a bit cheaper so I decided on that one. I've been very happy with it up until now. No problems whatsoever..
