Hi Guys
I'm still going back and forth between this Choc 87 and CM Storm Rapid or TK.
The thing that I most like to know about this Choc is this:
Are these keys lower than the other Mech keyboards or is that an optical illusion? If I look at the review of the Choc mini posted here I can clearly see it looks lower. If I look at the pictures of the 87 it looks similar.
As I have never been able to use a wrist wrest (it just .. argh, bugs me xd) this is a bit a concern for me. Can anyone tell me if these Noppoo keys are indeed easier to use over the higher normal mechanical keyboards like the CM Storm QF TK?
Thank you in advance!
*Note I currently own the newer version of the Noppoo Choc Mini. (Basically no red function keys on the right side of the board. Delete (Delete does have the Switch lock for Ctrl/Caps Lock switch) Home, PgUp, PgDown, and End, > key) I bought my Reds from Qtan and my Browns from Amazon. That came out confusing but just look for pictures of the newer and older version of the Choc Mini and you'll understand what I'm saying.
I also own the CM QF TK w/ Reds and have 2x CM QFR's w/ Reds/Browns coming anyday now. Have previously owned a Razer BWU 2013 and 4 Ducky Shine 9087's in all the flavors. I can say with with confidence that the QF TK's build quality is superior to the Choc Mini. The OEM for the TK just flat out made a better board. The only thing I don't really like about the TK is the keycaps. Definitely a weird shape and rather small even compared to Choc Mini. But other than that it's a really good solid keyboard that is a decent weight so it doesn't move and feels solid. The leg stands just flip out to on position but are fairly sturdy from what I can tell. Of course some of the larger keys like the Shift key are a teeny bit squishy but that's the cherry stabilizers (are not as squishy as the ones on my Ducky Shine 2 9087's.)
The Choc Mini is a great concept and overall is not that bad. I REALLY REALLY dig the Ctrl/Caps Lock swap for gaming. Amazing for MMO's like WoW. Has the standard Windows key disable function, NKRO (really overhyped since 99.9% of the time 6-key rollover is just fine.) I was also very surprised at how light the
Choc Mini is compared to other TKL keyboards. And I mean it's a LOT lighter compared to say a CM QFR.
The 2 main problems with the Choc Mini are the leg stands and certain keycaps. The legs themselves only have one fold out point. Basically you flip them out and that's it, no adjusting. They are cheap looking/feeling and are wobbly. I have that non-slip cloth or whatever its called under mine so it stabilizes it. Also use a Ducky TKL hand rest which goes really well with this and other smaller boards. Now the main qualm I have with this keyboard is that certain keys ie Shift (both), Enter, Ctrl and Alt on left side, Caps Lock, and Tab are all barely lodged on the keyboard. If you press any of those keys anywhere but the middle of the key there is A LOT OF PLAY in the key. And I mean A LOT. The key basically tilts off the switch if you press on either side of the key. This is extremely annoying if you are spamming keys in a video game and really just shows shoddy workmanship. Also the space bar is very loose on the board and if it didn't have the metal bar stabilizers keeping it there I think it would just pop off. Now the things I mentioned are not game breakers. And it's weird because looking at all the other reviews/threads on GeekHack and elsewhere no one else has really mentioned anything that I've listed. I wouldn't say I'm going to return my Choc Mini's but I was a little disappointed when I started to use them. Might look into a Vortex KBT Race but I don't think it has media keys, windows key disable, or Caps Lock/Ctrl swap. Can anyone confirm any of those for me? Would greatly appreciate it.
Conclusion: Overall it's a pretty decent board with a few issues that if were fixed I think it would be a pretty awesome keyboard. I really love the layout of the board. I'd give the Choc Mini a 7.5/10 and the QF TK a 8.75/10
Hope this helps a little bit. Maybe if I stop being lazy I can make a video and illustrate exactly what I desribed. Meh...
