[SOLD] IBM Model M 1391401 bolt-modded 1991
« on: Sun, 04 August 2013, 13:18:18 »
I need to clear out some extra equipment, and could really use some extra cash.

Therefore, this will be a sale with an auction-like component.

For sale is a very nice, very clean, black label Model M in perfect working condition that has been bolt-modded (by me, of course). It will come with an original coiled SDL cable. The original label was damaged and I printed and installed a replacement in its place. This has the "intermediate" weight back plate, lighter than the original 1986-88 models and heavier than the current ones. It has also been cleaned and painted with Rustoleum.

There has been some debate over what the appropriate price for a keyboard like this would be. Personally, I think that $100 is about right, but I am not expecting to get that.

My price is $75 shipped domestic US, and if you want to offer more, feel free to do so. I will be away from my desk for several hours this afternoon until about 8:00 pm Eastern time. The first buyer at my price gets it, unless I have a higher offer waiting - then that one takes priority. I will make it like an auction at $5 increments - if I have a bid at $90 and one at $75, the high bidder gets it at $80. If I have 2 bids at $90, the earlier one gets it at $90.

Otherwise it goes on ebay at $75 + $17 shipping Monday night.

Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

I knew that all the whining I been seeing here for the past few weeks and months about people not being able to buy a good clean IBM Model M at a reasonable price was a load of bologna.

Here is a bolt-modded beauty at below the price of a new Unicomp, with 38 views and no buyer.

Hopefully there will be less hypocrisy, at least for a while, on this subject.

I will leave it up on ebay for at least a week or 2 before I start dropping the price.

Great price fohat! If I had not recently bought 2 SSKs I'd be all over it. You can't beat the price for such a great board. Some may mention clickykeyboards too but they charge $90 and they are not in nearly as good shape. Plus the keycaps are usually really worn out and smooth.
SSKs for everyone!

I think some people mean $50 or lower.  I know that's my price limit for one.

...but this one has been COMPLETELY REFURBISHED by one of the most respected Model M experts around. If you find one for $50 on ebay you still need to pay shipping and then spend at least another $50 in parts and or labor to get it clean and fully functional.

$75 fully restored and shipped is a STEAL!  Edit: These boards are heavy and cost at lest $15 to ship. So, it's much closer to $60 which is really too low for all of the work that has gone into refurbing it.

Not complaining about the price at all.  I'm just mainly making the comment about where I think some people, like myself, put the line for "affordable" for Model Ms.  I do agree that that's not a bad price for a bolt modded Model M in that clean of condition, I just think different people have different notions of reasonable and affordable.

You can't beat the price for such a great board.

Shipping is $16 and the hardware for the bolt-mod is $10 just on its own, ignoring the hour(s) required to do it.

Theoretically, a bolt-mod could be done in an hour or 2, but it usually takes 3 because it includes a thorough cleaning inside and out, and you always end up putting it completely together and taking it completely apart at least once because of one tiny spring hammer off its track, or something like that. So, 3 hours, at minimum wage ....

Subtracting those costs puts the actual price of the keyboard itself in the $35 range, and how many ebay boards at that price have a complete set of caps?

So, I am the idiot giving this thing away. I should raise the price to at least $85, but first $75 to  topvendor@gmail.com  gets it.

Or buy the garbage board at $50

Great price, sadly I'm spoiled by the F so I won't go back to Model Ms.

I would totally buy this, but my current daily driver at home is another bolt and floss modded Model M by none other than Mr.  Fohat.digs himself. Based on the drum tight quality of that board, I can definitely say that this would be a great purchase for anyone seeking a Model M!

That was a good one, too, a project with my teenage so to do a "faux camo"

After using it for about a year, he took over a G80-11900 (MX black) that was laying around, since he is a gamer. It took him a few weeks to stop missing the tactility.

This current one for sale is very similar in vintage and components, but not flossed. "Plain Jane" however, not wild and aggressive like yours:

If I didn't already have a bunch of Model M's and F's I would buy this. If you're reading this, and you've never tried a Model M buckling spring before, this is a good buy. And it's already bolt-modded by a pro.

Fohat, these people are just scared their entire MX/Topre collection of 'boards will have to be sold once they've touched a buckling spring.

That would be more likely after using a Model F than a Model M.

I have a sale pending but I don't have a lot of faith in it because it is international. I also have a backup buyer waiting.

I put this keyboard up on the idea that it would sell quickly because it is a desirable item.

Considering the amount of time it takes to clean and mod these, that's basically negative money. People are pretty silly for failing to jump on this immediately.
