OEM Case Discussion
« on: Mon, 15 July 2013, 19:02:25 »
As I am continuing my lustful keyboardless life I have began to brood more and more over the fine details of OEM cases.

I'd like to hear about what you like and what you hate about OEM cases.

----

Here are some of my preferences.

Color: Pure white or dark gray
Beveled Edge or Straight Edge: Straight Edge
Corners: Sharp
LED Holes: Heck no
Mini USB Position: Top Left [I think this is only seen on 60%'s AFAIK]
Shiny or Matte: Matte
Feet: I never liked using them so no.

Thoughts: As I've mentioned in other threads, the FC700R case looks like my dream come true. Clean, straight lines and solid color without any kind of labeling or logo. The sharp corners are the best part! Why don't more manufacturers see the sharp corner trend in custom cases?

I really wish the Filcos and QFRs didn't have those silly dedicated LEDs for indicators. They just seem like a distraction to me.

And man the beveling on the Keycool 87's is just too much! So tacky!

kbt oni case is pretty much the same as the 700r case (it's black though).

At first glance I also thought the Oni was close, but I noticed the corners on the Oni were much more rounded. The edges of the case are also a lot less square and more rounded/beveled.

Edit: Thanks for the suggestion though!

Color: I could choose many. Basic colors (black, beige, white, grey etc) look great, but sometimes something more flashy is necessary.
Straight Edge
Rounded enough that it isn't uncomfortable to touch the edge.
LED holes: NO
Cable position: middle or 1/4 mark on the left
Matte
Feet: hope I don't need to use them. Better have rubber if I do use them so they don't slide.
Branding(new category): minimal branding if any. Acceptable if done in an elegant way like the Filco unlike the unbranded QFR's

Thoughts: I really like the case on my QFR other than the fact that it is in two pieces (top and base) that aren't aligned. Otherwise I like the angle and feel of the case with the rounded edges and rubber coating. I have been looking to paint it for some more pizazz, but I feel that the default color is a nice grey. If I were getting an expensive case, I would want that to be perfect, but the QFR is great for the price.

I really wish the Filcos and QFRs didn't have those silly dedicated LEDs for indicators. They just seem like a distraction to me.

QFR's don't have the LED holes like the Filco. It has LED's underneath the caps/scroll lock.

Color: Anything really
Edge Type: It depends on the application and the overall aesthetic of the keyboard, but I'm more of a straight edge guy
Corner Type: More of a sharp 90 degree angle
LED Holes: I wish manufacturer's would come up with a more elegant lighting solution for this
USB Position: Honestly depends on your setup, right now for me a connection on the right would be better than one on the left
Shiny: Depends really, but I'm more of a matte guy
Feet: Yes please, I like as much adjustment as possibru!

Regardess, it's hard for me to subscribe to a specific preference regarding OEM cases because it's more of a "I know I like it when I see it" thing. I will say that I thoroughly enjoy what Corsair is doing with their K-series lineup in regards to the case, mainly because I think they are doing something that is truly unique. I would seriously consider buying one of their keyboards provided they offered more of the uncommon switches like MX Clears.
