My first homemade keyboard - Omron_B3G-S Alps 60%
« on: Tue, 09 July 2013, 19:34:20 »
First I would like to thank all the wonderful members here that have answered a lot of my questions while I have been building this.

I built my own keyboard using minimal money.

I bought a few used keyboards from a local pc repair/recycle shop.
I liked the feeling of the one with the amber Omron_B3G-S Alps the most.

So I desoldered all the switches and removed the pcb. then I cut the plate down to 60% size.
poker iso size.

I followed the lowpoly method demonstrated by Matt3o's build log threads for his steelbeauty and brown fox keyboards/ and samwisekoi's GH75 wiki page here http://wiki.geekhack.org/index.php?title=Hard-Wiring_How-To.

this page had the datasheet that unlocked the pinouts for the omron switches for me. (thanks Findecanor)

The Matrix is all wired to a Teensy 2.0 controller using hasu's firmware.
hasu has been very helpful as well in answering my questions to get it setup. Thanks!

I have only one pic for you atm but I will update this with more potato pics soon.

I love the rust on the plate lol.

It is serving it's purpose. to learn hasu's firmware and to develop future firmware related projects.

RALT = FN
FN + / = \
I miss the windows key to open the run menu so maybe I will make FN + R = Run menu

Oooo, how do the omrons compare to say the Matias Clicky or Clicky White Alps?

I am also curious. How would you describe the Omron switches?

to me they are louder and require more force then white clicky alps.
the board is at work atm but I will take more pics tomorrow and if I can collect enough nickels I will try the ripster nickel weighing test.

I have not tried matias switches yet. btw omrons are a different switch hole cutout from normal alps. but they fit all standard alps keycaps. :D

You should thank Daniel Beardsmore. He has done a great job on the Deskthority Wiki.

I really like the legos or i think that is what the case is made out of lol. I'm working on making a hard wired keyboard as well and only 2 weeks after finding out people were making their own keyboards on this forum lol

Most awesome - great work (even if you think it is only a 'learner' board).
