Help me find an appropriate keyboard?
« on: Mon, 29 July 2013, 14:30:41 »
All right, so I'm not an expert on mechanical keyboards, though I am a fan of them. At home, I have a Razer BlackWidow as it was cheap (I got it for 50% off thanks to a NewEgg coupon), and I knew I liked the blue Cherries. It's been all right, for the most part. I still am a fan of the blues, but there is an issue...

They're LOUD. This is a bonus for me, as I enjoy the sound of my keyboard thoroughly. However, people around me aren't fans so much. I want to find a keyboard that will satisfy me and NOT annoy the people around me, for the office.

The feel is most important. I enjoy the feel of the blue switches. Can I get that feel without my much-loved clicky noise? What would you recommend? (Note: The programmable aspect of the BlackWidow is completely unimportant. I do not use it at all and would probably prefer a simpler keyboard anyway.)

Any ideas what switches I should investigate? Or even whole board suggestions? I'm comfortable modifying things as well, though I wouldn't want to build my own board from scratch.

You could try whites, they have a very slight click. Or perhaps jailhouse blues, they have no click due to being modded.

Have a look around and read some peoples impressions of switches.

captain has a wonderful switch write up here

I would recommend browns. They are tactile like the blue switches you have used, are fairly common, don't require modding, and they still do make noise just not really a click sound. If you want the clicking, then I would look into white switches, which are considered to have a softer 'click' noise.

Thanks, guys. I've been reading a little, and I was wondering if brown might be ideal, there's just a lot of information out there to digest.

The only thing I know for certain is that Cherry blacks make me angry, but of course that's because they're nothing like what I'm going for.

What was the reason you didn't like blacks, the linear motion, the heaviness?
