Blackstorm stealth keyboard switch
« on: Sun, 13 October 2013, 14:15:39 »
Hello,

I've just joined the community and stumbled upon this keyboard in the largest Finish computer retailer. Seems to be an inhouse brand, as I can't seem to find the keyboard anywhere else, but the picture about the switches intrigued me. It's not explained anywhere what they are, and I've never seen them. Does anyone know these switches?

You can see a diagram of the switches in the fourth product picture.

Welcome to Geekhack!

They look like rubber dome with sliders to me, which were relatively common back in the 80s and 90s. The 'special rubber' may mean that they are built to higher quality/tolerances than standard rubber dome keyboards, and the sliders may help give a nicer feel, but that's about it.

Yeah seems like a small improvement over the normal keycap on the left, nothing major. Still a bit intrigued about this as I've not seen it anywhere else. Maybe just a marketing gimmick?  Maybe just the support plate could have achieved the same effect. On the reviews someone was saying they remind him of a keytronic.

Yeah seems like rubber dome with removable keycap and slider, and maybe a thicker rubber.

However if they can manage to get it to feel like Topre then it might be worth it.  Because Topre is basically rubber dome (oneness with cup rubber) with removable keycap and slider and coiled spring.

Though the name really bugs me, it sounds like a rip off of Blackwidow + CM Storm.

And the inhouse gaming computer line derives from the gaming cafe, or the cafe is sponsored by blackstorm, tho I swear the cafe was first, well..  who knows

It has POM-switches, whatever they are and PBT caps.

POM is a type of plastic, which sometimes goes by the trade name, "delrin". If it sues POM in the switch construction (in the sliders perhaps?) it could account for POM being used to refer to the switch.

There is some evidence (on the spacebar underside) that cherry uses the same molds for their PBT and POM keycaps, so if it says "PBT on it, it's not always for sure PBT. I would recommend a density / friction test.

So basically the same as a normal rubber dome, maybe a bit firmer. I'll tell you more if they have any on display when I visit the store.
