HHKB Pro2 stabilisers
« on: Fri, 18 October 2013, 18:43:39 »
I'm wondering how the stabilizers on topre boards feel like. I'm planning on getting the HHKB Pro 2 soon, and I want to know if the stabilizers are more like Cherry or Costar.

Feel wise, I'd say they feel more like Costar.  Not mushy at all and all the keys feel consistent.

Structure wise, they are more like Cherry.  It has 2 supporting "stem" on both sides with wire hooked across from under.  So it's easier to take on/off keycaps.

Though keep in mind that for Topre, only spacebar have stabilizers.  All the other keys just connect directly to the switch and that's it (yes that includes, shift, backspace, enter).  Somehow it is enough to keep the keys stabilized.

I hadn't even thought about HHKB having stabilisers.

My HHKB space bar feels the same as the other keys around it - so I guess that coincides with Hyde's comments about consistent feeling across the keys.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The stabilized keys on the HHKB and Realforce keyboards have the best feel, better than Cherry or Costar. But the shift, backspace, enter have stabilizers but they are internal. On the HHKB they are between the top housing and the PCB, on the Realforce between the plate and PCB.

Shockingly good. The only way you know they are there is they make a soft rattling noise. Here is what they look like. Also, I swear Ripster recently did something on Topre switches and stabilizers on /r/mechanicalkeyboards, but I can't find it.
