Leopold FC660M, gray case and brown switches.
« on: Wed, 27 November 2013, 09:14:36 »

This is not a review, only some thoughts about this model.

This keyboard is very well know in the community already. However, I think I may add my grain of salt. I got it from QTan's store at Vendio and everything went so smooth with the transaction and the keyboard reached me in 4 business days. I saw the package moving even over the weekend. I am very impressed with the short lead time because the keyboard came from China.

On the keyboard what I may add to the already available information on the model is how it does compare with a Poker with reds. I used this Poker for more than a year. I like its low weight, aesthetics and standard keycaps. However its quality built is just marginal. I already notice the space bar to fail to register some times. Layout-wise I missed the arrow keys some, but the main drawback for me was the delete key that needs Fn+?. I just never adjusted to that even over a year.

The Leopold has a much better construction, it is heavier than the Poker and some that wants it to move with it should consider the additional weight. I do that daily and what I may say is the extra weight if fairly compensated for the better overall feeling of the keyboard. There is no much to say about the layout, it has arrows and delete key. For me this makes a huge difference in efficiency while navigating spread-sheets and long documents.

I have read some complaints on the space bar of the Leopold because it has non standard stems. That is true, however I may say that I have not used a more comfortable space bar shape than this and I have tried pretty much all shapes and vendors bars available but the metallic ones. The texture of the PBT in the bar, its height, and its shape makes it a very good typing aid. You should considerer that the space bar is one of the most used keys in your board.

The quality and finish of the plastic case is also very good. The Leopold has its switches plate mounted and the stabilizers are also very good. I have changed most of the keys for black OEM DS cherries and the purple mods. The look is quite nice. I am waiting for a POM black space bar to complete the black key caps set. I will post some pics when the space bar arrives.

As a conclusion the 660m feels like a quality input device, while the Poker feels just cheap in comparison. It is only my opinion of course. Just want to share this general comments just in case someone is interested in get more information about the 660m to make a decision.

The only thing that compares to Filco in quality for MX right now is the Leopold, in my opinion. Solid board.

Actually it feels very solid. I was expecting something in the same class as the Poker, so I was surprised by the good construction and how it improves the typing I do all day long. Now it is becoming my best research partner at the university  :) .

The only thing that compares to Filco in quality for MX right now is the Leopold, in my opinion. Solid board.

Well thank you, but I think it is way too short and unstructured to be called a review...

Sounds like a review to me! Should have put it there. Thanks for the write-up.

It is longer than some reviews we have seen.

Add a photo (or two) and you would have a fully-blown review.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
