Quick question. Why do most ErgoDOX use blank keycaps? Since it's open source I'm assuming it's to support any type of layout the user wants to program into the keyboard. Having said that, does anyone sell a full set of keycaps with legends and all? can I just purchase a regular keycaps set from somewhere else. Thanks.

where would you put the two button extension?

holding on my hand...

Seriously, I assume you mean how do I wire the two buttons?

The thumb cluster of the ergodox have two spare sets of holes for two additional keys, I just solder the diodes and the cable to these holes. It is really very straightforward.

Using tmk firmware, the two buttons can function as 4 keys now (with the ACTION_LAYER_TAP_KEY(layer, key) function), which is kind of neat

However, I think pedals can serve my purpose better, and freeing my hands from web browsing. actually the pedals I ordered just arrived today. will try to connect them to the ergodox after the holidays.

How many pedals does it take to browse with your feet?... O.o
QWERTY(104wpm) -> CarpalxQ(modded) -> Colemak(118wpm) -> Colemak-DH
Mouse less.

well i havent really seen any full ergodox sets that have legends.  most ergodox keycap sets come in blanks simply because with legends they would never be able to satisfy everyone configuration.  what you should do is this:

find a group buy for DCS or DSA caps with legends. buy an alpha set or TKL set if possible. use the blank DSA caps from the massdrop buy for all your modifiers. if you want then you can get individual modifier caps made from SP with your desired legends (i think it is like $7 per cap).

we may get lucky though. with another massdrop ergo sale perhaps one of our esteemed elders will start a buy for the DOX with legends.  that buy would be a logistical nightmare of course but it could happen maybe?

what i am going to do is use the DOLCH DSA Caps i ordered from REDLINE (If those clowns ever ship) for my alphas and then leave the blank black mods from Massdrop until i can source the mods.

Actually I use them to read long pages, so currently I assigned 4 actions to two switches, page up/page down/back/tab. I still need other means for navigation.

If we use 3 pedals, we can have 9 actions, the need for mouse/keyboard will be significantly reduced.

Round 5

SA Caps for an ErgoDox?! what ta ya crazy!?

i mean i have some SA Caps and the idea of putting them on my incoming Dox is nutso.  the profile of SA Caps changes dramatically between rows. I think a DSA or maybe (maybe) DCS caps are a must.

There are two sets: uniform Row 3 and the normal one, I think.

this is incorrect. SA profiles for each row are different. by a good amount. Round 5 does not offer uniform Row 3 alpha keys (which i have never heard a SA set having)

From Round 5 Wiki:

i am obsessed with how SA sets look. i am a huge fan. but i also can admit their weakness, which is these caps are as far from uniform profile as you can get.

commando has all row 3 alphas (and penumbra will also)

What I want to know is: Have they fixed the bugs?
- holes in the plate for Costar-style stabilisers being on the wrong side of the switch, don't fit
- outer column keys for 1u has the holes wrong.

i was under the impression that alps switches are not doable on the ergo dox's current PCB.

So was I, but apparently that's not correct:

From here

Close, but not perfect. You would need a custom plate, also.
The Alps switches are a tiny bit higher up, so you may not be able to combine Matias and Cherry MX switches freely on the same board.

I stand corrected about no r3 only SA sets being out there. Damn that round 5 buy is huge.

Clears are best with 62g Springs? I like blues. What about just putting in brown Springs? Are they strong enough for the clear switch?

In my experience anything above 55g is fine depending on your tactile preferences.  The lighter spring you use, the more of the bump you'll feel as opposed to a "cushiony" feeling on the bottom out.

I'm pretty sure Clears with brown springs are called ergo clears and they seem to polarize people - some love them, some hate them. I haven't tried either clears or ergo clears.
