If someone just wants the caps from this laptop, I have 2 sets from the same type of keyboard, one completely unused and one slightly used (a bit shiny, not too bad) I’ll happily sell either set (including the plate/pcb/stabilizers if you want) for much less than $25 (I got them from ebay, but I just wanted the switches). Shoot a PM.

I'd be tempted, but ...
1. Not all keycaps are standard shape, even "1!" is elongated.
2. The keycaps are lower profile, so any replacement or add-on "modern" Dolch sets would not match.
3. Too many missing keys e.g. only goes up to F10.
4. Space bar.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've considered doing this with an IBM PC 5140.  And then complaining to the barista that the wi-fi doesn't work.

I will do this when I get my 40-lb selectric converted to USB (likely using small magnets and hall sensors on the typebars). I will then plug it into my phone for properly composing SMS messages.

Let's see: your phone is 1/4 lb
The selectric is 40.

Your keyboard is 160x the weight of your phone?

To put it another way, I would be pretty impressed by the kind of guy who's hands are 160x the weight of his brain. My limited imagination supplies the figure of Mickey Mouse (who has huge hands and a pea sized brain).
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

it'll be on a table. I can't carry the typewriter and also type. It also needs to be plugged in to a wall to click correctly.
