Wrist Rests

Are these worth buying? If so, which are the best to buy?

I have never really used one for an extended period of time, but I figure they might be comfortable.

The general consensus of many people here is that the cheap, flat foam wrist rests are best.  A thread here ended up with a bunch of us talking about them (just read from that point on).

Thanks for posting this. I've been using rolled up microfiber cloth. I wouldn't mind fabbing up one of those wooden HHKB rests, but I'd like to grab up a piece of 2x4 and a cheap gel wrist rest just to test them both out first.

and thought it would look good with a filco tenkeyless or that new realforce 87U but it is not cheap it is about $40 then you have to add shipping from japan but if you are already getting something might be worth looking at.

I'm using one of the Filco wrist rests with my board and generally like it because it is much wider than most readily available wrist rests, but it is pretty hard and the leather (or pleather?) does tend to get warm after a couple of hours typing.

That was one of the things I noticed about it and thought I would like so I ordered one with the keyboard I just ordered.

But I have also been thinking about making my own out of memory foam. Over at overstock.com you can get it for  $40-50 depending on what kind you want. That way I could cut it to fit for every board I have and still have some left over. But I would also have to figure out a cover but still I may end up doing it at some point. I hope to have my HH style ones available soon. They will have brown leather or red. I even have some antique green leather which is very nice.
Unfortunately ill health has prevented me from getting these done sooner but I will give all long time GH members a good deal.
I should have wood choices and size choices available too.

Other than something that lam can create, the best ones I have have ever used are the cheap, thick mousepad types.  You can get them on eBay for dirt cheap.  I bought four of them last time.  I keep two at work and two at home.  I like my rests to be firm and no higher than about 3/4 of an inch (or equal in height to the front edge/top of the keyboard).  If they are too high, it's uncomfortable to type on.

I think a red lam-creation could be great, but I'm curious if the wood would eventually cause my wrists to hurt.  I like wrist rests because wrists get a rest on softer material than my desk when I set them down.

Those do look to be pretty comfortable I may have to get one. I want something soft as well. I have used the hard ones and they are OK for shorts stints but for long stints of typing I much prefer the soft ones.

They would be covered in leather (over a pad, if I am not mistaken), so they would be less than hard. I, personally, prefer firmer rests since it allows me to move around the 'board a little more easily.  I mainly use rests to elevate my hands in relation to the keyboard to keep my wrists flat.

Just remember NOT to use them WHILE your fingers are typing. These are to be used while you are taking a typing break and resting your wrists. I personally don't use wrist wrests. When I do take a typing break, I just use my chair armrests. Different strokes for different folks.

Well, here's a wrist rest that I made using very cheap materials.

A block of thin wood, roughly about 0.8 cm, and a whole piece of Polyurethane foam (those that are used to wrap around air-conditioning tubings to prevent condensation) that is about 1.8cm thick.

What I like about this is that the PU foam is quite firm, yet there is a slight depression made when my wrists are above it. Sort of like emulating leather, but much cheaper and nice to make. Goes well with my Filco Blank Tenkeyless as well..

Total cost? $0.0 since I took the parts from a garage junk area, lol!

Enough with the talk, here are some pictures! I highly recommend you guys to start making your own wristwrests.. well, not to the level of perfection and beauty that one of our Geekhacker here has been able to reproduce. His self-made wristwrest with mahogany are much better than mine, and yes... I do find them sexy as well.

That looks very nice and soft...yummy! I don't like the hard ones, if any. It would be hard to beat that, unless it is made of titties.

For lower profile keyboards such as the Cherry G84-4100 and G80-1800 I like to use a small towel folded in half, with the rest under the keyboard to dampen the sound of the desk. I quite like the look of these by favfemme, basically the same idea but they also double as dust covers and are anti-static:

I find this too. I tried to make my own out of memory foam but found it too soft and it got in the way unless squished. It might be nice if you rest as you type though.

I don't even use a rest for my ML-4100, but I like the towel idea if only for softness.  For the record, I am speaking from the perspective of a wrist rester; I never did like hovering over the keyboard.

It is very soft, but there is also the firmness of the desk too. The smallest Supima is just the right size for small keyboards.

I'll keep this in mind. Although I touch type, I can get lazy at times. I might try one of these DIY solutions, if I can find the right stuff.

LOL Of course after I ordered some with my Realforce 87U I will not tell you how much I paid for them either because it was to much way to much.
