In Need of Soldering Tool Suggestions
« on: Thu, 29 May 2014, 10:32:14 »
I plan on modding my first keyboard. I want to start with something simple like switching my spacebar switch on my Ducky Shine 2. It is plate mounted so I will be to desolder the current switch and soldering in the new one. I have the switch, but no iron.

Can anyone recommend a good soldering iron, desoldering pump and/or any other tools I may need as a beginner?

I don't really have a budget but I don't exactly want to spend an arm and a leg. I'd like to be on the cusp of where performance/features to price starts to diminish. In other words, I'd like something that is good but doesn't have all the bells and whistles I don't need that costs extra. However, I don't want anything cheap or unreliable just to save money.

Thanks.

If you can find the iron, Hakko 936. If you can afford it, Hakko 888D.

For desoldering tools? Edsyn Soldapullt. If you can afford it, Hakko 808 is one of the better purchases I've made this year.

That's all you really need....maybe some spudgers and needle nose pliers.

Thanks CPT. You always make your way to my question threads (probably unknowingly) and give the best advice.

Edit: Amazon prime has them in stock. Checking out now. Looks like a good buy: Hakko FX888D-23BY Digital Soldering Station FX-888D FX-888 by Hakko http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ANZRT4M/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_m21Htb18W1VRC

i use a Edsyn Soldapullt and a Hakko FX-888D. wonderful combination but i had to buy some smaller tips than what the hakko gave me with the 888d.  what can i say i like my tips small.  :p :p

seriously though these purchases have really paid off. i use my iron all the time now because i like doing it.

edit:  oh yea. also Kester 44 is the way to go as far as solder.

I also really like the Soldering thread for info.

Thanks CPT. You always make your way to my question threads (probably unknowingly) and give the best advice.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you think that but I'm not sure if I have the best advice. :))

Nice. My next question was the solder but you just answered that. Adding to my order as we speak.

Checking that thread as well. Sorry for creating a new one.

I use a BK3000LF station. A colleague responsible for soldering in manufacturing recommended it to me over a Hakko and I'm quite happy w/ it.
Currently using: RK-9000WH/GR, CMS QFXT w/ Ghost Squid
