New to mechanical keyboards, keycap question
« on: Mon, 07 July 2014, 19:58:41 »
Hey, I just bought a cherry MX switch tester to find out what kind of switch I want to use, and will be getting my first mechanical keyboard soon. I've been reading that PBT keys are usually better than ABS keys because they're a little stronger and don't wear off as easily, so I was thinking of getting this barebones WASD v2 keyboard with these black otaku PBT keycaps.

Since this is my first mechanical keyboard I want to be sure these will work together, I couldn't find anything about what key profile (OEM vs cherry) either of these are, or if it matters or not.

I dont think so. The WASD board has 8 keys on the bottom row (including spacebar) and the set only shows 7 on the bottom row.

Darn, I think that means I'd have to buy the winkey set as well which is out of stock. Anyone know of any other places to get otaku pbt blacks like that? This looks like the next best thing, but everywhere I've looked is out of stock  :(

I dont think so. The WASD board has 8 keys on the bottom row (including spacebar) and the set only shows 7 on the bottom row.

You'd need the Otaku kit and the Winkey kit also. The Winkey kit contains all the correct bottom row caps for the WASD board (1.25x modifiers and 6.25x spacebar) and the correct Caps Lock cap, but it looks like they're out of stock of the Winkey kit.

Your best option would be to ask in this thread if someone wants to transfer their blank set to you: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50935.0

They're Cherry profile thick PBT blanks in very very dark grey. Just light enough that deep black dyesub legends will be just visible.

These are good caps for the price, but they seem to be out of stock at the moment, too: http://www.banggood.com/POM-87-Set-Blank-Key-Caps-Black-Keycaps-For-Cherry-MX-Keyboard-p-84081.html

Medium thickness blank black POM in OEM profile. I prefer POM to PBT for a number of reasons, it's denser than PBT, smoother feeling, etc.

Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Here is nice POM set, for cheap price (about $38, though I am not sure about the shipping fee) in Cherry profile. Caps lock might be stepped and not fit on the WASD though since the set is for Cherry 3000.
Alternately, if you having hard time to find black set you could always get a white PBT set and do a little DIY. It's very easy to dye PBT and you get a nice black by mixing RIT black + navy blue and letting them cook until it's nice and deep.
Thirdly, there is my groupbuy as already mentioned, but the production time still be some time before anything will be delivered so it might not be a good option if you are not prepared to wait.
Or, you could go with DSA from SP which is also a reasonably priced option if you wouldn't mind flat uniform key profile.
Another option, you could keep an eye for blank black, or go sideprint or navy blue on Leopold set which are very nice as well.

Thanks, do you think these will fit? Thick PBT white blanks, he says it will fit Filco/Leopold/PLU/Ducky if that helps.

Those will fit fine. Qtan is a good seller and has an account here on GH, so you can ask directly if you have questions.
