Guys with experience, please speak up! By sharing information on this site, we can figure out how to do our own dyesubs at an inexpensive price.
Looks like it might be possible to get an entire PBT set of custom dyesubs for under $50, not including the fixed cost of the machine? The technology is probably still too new to be completely reliable, but it's very promising.
I write about my experience sometimes on this blog:

http://keycapdiy.blogspot.jp/2014/01/my-instruments.htmlIdeas and experience (not latest):
http://keycapdiy.blogspot.jp/2014/01/some-thoughts.htmlThe price of keycaps comes from the quantity.
1. Supply of PBT blank keycaps. For example, SP's full set is $188.66 when the quantity is 5 sets. But when 200 sets, it becomes $39.6!
The secondary reason I use Keycool 87 is it. Banggood sells KC87's blank keycap only $17 for only 1 set. Recently I've found Unicomp sells Model M's full set for $30. I'm examining about it.
2. Investment for tools. Bigger 3D dye-sub machine makes work time shorter. With my tiny machine, I've used about 2 hour for a TKL set. Bigger machine will make it 20 min or less.
But bigger machine would raise more complex technical problem. It means the risk of wasting the big machine!
There are the problems of the quantity.
By the way, if you only wish the freedom of the design, I recommend UV-printing. Dye-sub cannot print white on black. This is a hard restriction.
