Keycap sits weirdly on keyboard
« on: Thu, 10 July 2014, 13:52:14 »
I just bought this set

http://www.originativeco.com/collections/keysets/products/bsp-classic-beige

on a Filco mj2 tkl and the right shift button is very weird.  It's like it doesn't go all the way down and feels very weird.  Do you guys know what could be up?

Is your white insert in the wrong way on one of the sides..? Common problem.

Also with bsp caps I believe the inserts are loose so you might need to stick in some tape or tissue to keep it in place.

Yeah, sounds like a misaligned stabilizer. Remove the cap and realign.

on some filcos, aftermarket keycaps will rub on the edge of the case. If it's not a stabilizer issue, look at that next.

So it is costar, are the little stabilizer nubs inside of the keycap facing the right way? As in the long side of them points towards the top of the keyboard (F key row)

I don't know if that is what you mean by they are put on right

You can sand your case a bit safely.

DON'T SAND THE CASE! Instead, sand the inside edges of the keycap that lines up to the 2 plastic stabilizer brackets that rest in the plate. When thicker keycaps bottom out, the inside edge hits the plastic bracket at the four points, making it not bottom out properly unless you press harder, then it clicks past and bottoms out. I have experienced this multiple times with thick keycaps with costar stabilizers.

I now have the same problem with an ABS spacebar, is there somewhere a tutorial on how to sandpaper the insides of the keycap?

Sigh.... Costar stabs and thick keycaps.

The best fix: switch to Cherry stabs (clip the tabs if you want to remove the "mushiness"). The other fix, do what PolaBurr said and file the inside of the cap by the stabilisers.

Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Do you know when I could buy some cherry stabs?

What I meant was to switch to a keyboard that has Cherry stabs, you can't swap the stabilisers on most boards between the two types. IvanIvanovich just ran a group buy for Cherry stabs and they're available from a few other places.

Guess I'll have to start practicing my filing skills.
