Cad files for MX cherry switches
« on: Sat, 19 January 2013, 21:59:27 »
Just wondering if anyone ever saw or has some 3d auto cad files for an mx cherry? I doubt cherry would give me them if I asked.

I'd be happy with just the shell with no internals.

Any use?: http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/drawings/drawingstree.htm

I haven't looked at them (No autocad on my personal desktop) but they'll be 2d and not 3d. But still very useful!

Take switch apart.
Scan each part with 3D scanner.
Job done  ;D

While you are at it could you please whip me up taller versions of Red switches and Brown switches?  Something with 8mm to 12mm of travel would be perfect.  MegaThanx!

That would be crazy, you'd need totally new moulds for keycaps since the actuation point would be at 4-6 mm with that much travel.

There would be no real accurate way to model these switches without using 3D scanner tech.  It's just too intricate inside, and even then, you would need to know how much flex they initially put into the gold plated switch contacts to have them push the way they do without too much resistance.  The alloy they use is also important for certain characteristics.  It can be done though.

Actually I was hoping for modified Cherry Red, Blue, Brown switches which would actuate at 2mm but then have 6mm or more, of travel distance after the actuation to give the spring the ability of building up so much resistance that one would never crash into the steel plate.

I don't really fully understand the way Cherry Switches are built or how they work.  Does my goal break any laws of physics?  Would I need to make new keycaps also?

All infos greatly appreciated!

Well the total travel on an MX switch currently is 4 mm-ish so you would need new keycaps, yes.

They're nowhere near production grade, but I did exterior models of Cherry MX and ALPS switches in Google's Ketchup.

Good work, is that model purely exterior only? or does it have the internals?

I'm tempted to reinstall Pro-E back from my Uni days to have a play at modelling the switch.
Dont think the exterior should be too troubling, springs are pretty straightforward to make and assembly isnt bad either.

Side project - initiated!

And you say "not a rocket scientist."  Just kidding it isn't rocket science, but would be interesting to get the model.

lol well aerospace engineer=/=rocket scientist, id have to be mad or insane to qualify

Tbh my modelling skills are possibly very basic by now, but when I was doing it at Uni it was just watching youtube videos and adapting it to my work when tutors/lecturers were not available.

I'm sure there are solidworks/proE design engineers here and it would take them about an hour to do it.

Anywhere I can find some detailed mearsurements of the MX switches and the internals?

I also could test the aforementioned CAD files as there is a 3D printer in the office that our design team has set up.

To increase travel distance you (for the most part) just need to increase the depth of the bottom casing of the switch so the plunger takes longer to bottom out. You might have to increase plunger length too for stability but it depends on how much more travel distance you want.

I thought I was saying something retarded lol so I wanted to delete it before anybody saw. I had misread someone's post thinking they wanted taller caps to increase travel distance. But they actually said switches, not caps

I have no Earthly idea.
I only currently have $1000.00 to put toward this project.  I am pretty sure that $1000.00 is exactly the same thing as $0.00 for getting a new switch made.  That isn't even enough to bribe SP into making tall keycaps for the switches.

So basically this is a great big giant problem.

The only way to solve a seemingly impossible problem is to break it down into tiny little steps that can be successfully accomplished.

If you could somehow create working cad files and stretch them accordingly then maybe someone else might show up who can solve another piece of the puzzle.

If the switches in the cad files have mounting apparatus compatible to Cherry MX then it makes building a prototype keyboard much much easier as we would just take any random keyboard made for MX switches and mount the prototypes on that.

I don't even know where to get the long springs from.  Perhaps there is a certain size already manufactured that I could buy that might be some certain length.  We could then adjust the CAD files based on that available length.

A zero-impact keyboard switch would be a major technological advance for civilization.

SmallFry says I need new keycaps in order for a long-travel switch to operate.

So if you have anything interesting to say about that then I really want to hear.  :)

Would keycaps that are an extra 4mm taller than OEM keycaps be to wobbly?  Or to heavy?  Any other problems?

Who is going to make your switches for you?  ;D

Maybe that same person would be more interested in making a better switch instead of merely a perfect copy of a switch that everybody already has and is commonly available for a reasonable price?

Well I did the stem/plunger. I used a calliper to the best of my ability. Nothing is exact but I would say it is pretty damn close. Also my first time using Autodesk Inventor. Was actually not too difficult. In case anyone wants to do 3d stuff you can get the whole suite for free if you have a vaild university e mail.

It would be interesting to see how it compares to my isometric picture of an MX switch:

(I don't have any 3D modelling or CAD skills — I just work in isometric in Inkscape, which is probably insane.)
