Upcoming Job Interview
« on: Wed, 25 February 2015, 15:36:05 »
So, I have an interview for my first post grad job coming up in the next couple of weeks. I already work Help Desk for my university, and this company is basically a Help Desk for medical systems. I received this e-mail from them today.

"There will be some technical questions...I would be prepared for the following:

What is Ping?
What is trace route?
What information does IPCONFIG display?
What is DHCP?
What is DNS?

This is just a sample of things they may ask. "

...If this is as technical as this interview gets, I'm seriously just going to sign a lease in that city now... I had to answer more in-depth questions when I interviewed for the university Help Desk.

Sounds like you're ready young grasshopper.

Be calm and friendly at the interview and who knows....

Some job interviews are held by people with less technical skills than the job itself requires simply because the job they're hiring for is THE most technical job at the company.

Although, if the job requires more knowledge about their specific systems, this may well be the extent of the required skills outside of on-the-job training / learning.

Well, they already know that I'm not an IT major. They basically sign you for a year, and the year is spent learning their systems, hardware, etc. Past that, they move you elsewhere in the company. Someone vouched for me and knows that I'm technically inclined and can adapt easily, so I'm sure that was a big part of it.

"ipconfig" - oh, it's a Microsoft-based role.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If that's as technical as it gets, lets hope they have more spaces open ;)

If that is as technical as the questions get, you will probably face the usual 1D10T users all day every day.

I already encounter that daily. Just means it'll result in many more r/talesfromtechsupport therapy sessions.

Sounds like the interview should be a breeze. I've worked a lot of helpdesks over the years, if you've got good communication and technical skills you should be a shoe in compared to most.

Best of luck mate!
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.
