Hello! I'm whodevil!
« on: Wed, 25 February 2015, 19:12:40 »
Hi,

I'm a programmer who has been using the happy hacking keyboard light for 5 years or so. However, I have lusted after the HHKB Pro 2 for many more years than that. I finally made the plunge and bought one a couple days ago. I could not be more happy. While compulsively googling this new purchase, like you do, I came across the HHKB hardware hacking found in this forum. I've been a Dvorak user for a long time, and the idea that I can make a hardware Dvorak keyboard is SO AMAZING! Being a zsh/tmux/emacs nerd, I'm fond of the keybindings, so the hacking possibilities around the user programmable functions that are allowed by the hacked firmware also appeal to me. I find the custom keycap stuff really fascinating too. So I said, hell, pull the trigger, and become a member.

Thanks for having me.

Forgive my ignorance, I was looking at this thread, and am confused about said sales. Are these sales of keys that are available through the forum, sorry again for being new.

Yeah, Clacks sales are typically on GH (although I think a few were on elitekeyboards). Unfortunately you just missed out on Clackvent Radnelac 2015 so you might have to wait a while before you can get your clack fix (or you can buy stuff on classifieds). Welcome to GH!

Damn, that's a bummer. Seems like the mark up is pretty big on the classifieds, I'll probably just end up waiting until the next group buy. Seems like most of the custom key caps are primarily for Cherry MX rather than Topre... which seems curious, is there a reason why Cherry MX is more popular?

hardly as simple as you put it, heh. some people have participated in double digit number of sales and yet to lose their Clack virginity. as for why Cherry MX are popular, it's because the majority of mechanical keyboards are outfitted with mx switches. the prohibitive prices + low number of topre boards out there mean a large portion of artisan caps and every cool keyset GBs are for mx

willkommen!

Welcome to Geekhack!

The HHKB Lite has arrow keys, right?  Did you go for the HHKB Pro 2 US layout, or JP layout (the JP also having arrow keys)?

And yes, Clacks are nice, but sometimes difficult to acquire, unless you are in the right place at the right time, or have very deep pockets.  If you bide your time, sales do occur from time to time, it is just a case of entering when you can, and be prepared for disappointment.  Some people take a few sales before they get their first Clask, others manage to get even 2 or 3 in their first sale!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
