Call it a highdea, but it seems like an interesting question. It always seems like I end up doing a reboot every month or 2. I've seen boxes at work running for 100+ days.

What about you guys?

We have a machine at one of our locations that has been running since 2007, 3 reboots during that period, last one was in 2011. Next time I am there I'll get a picture of the log. It's some version of Suse iirc.

Without rebooting? It's not unusual to see them up for 300+ days at a time.

Are you rebooting because you need to, or for some other reason?

I've only run mine for 2-3 months because I shut it down when I'll be away for a longer stretch of time (usually a 4-5 day span is enough for me to shut it down). I also only am running the server when I'm at school, because we have a small NAS box at home that has the same media library and there's no point in having two boxes serving the same content in a small household.

In the time I've used my server, the only stability problems I ever encountered were related to a flaky power supply.

I run a VPS for quick file hosting, IRC, and web hosting.

I usually reboot when an update prompts me to although sometimes I ignore it for weeks at a time.

Uptime:

23:18:18 up 42 days,  6:02,  4 users

my three linux servers at work all hit 365 days last week.  we're moving buildings in a couple of months though so... alas, there will go my uptime.

I've seen a few with a couple years on 'em at work. But usually less than a year.

The longest running device I had was my OpenWRT router with 1 year, then it was time to update to the new distro version.

I have 2 or 3 servers which have been up for over 2 years iirc. I'm going to have to check to make sure later tonite.

edit: here we go http://imgur.com/a/q5qRj (one machine with 1243 days uptime, it's an app server). i know there are others in that range, but didn't want to ssh into each to check uptime.

As long as your kernel doesn't support live patching, please reboot to install updates.

Not me, but my dad had a server running in the basement that stayed live for around 4 years without a reboot.

Back in the late '90s some friends used to have a web and email server in a Linux tower box. They had set up an email forwarding service for me (I had a really short email address), but eventually I tended to use it less and less. After a few years I lost touch with them. I think the last time I met one of them was ten years ago now.

Then last year, I found myself at a party at an office. I found myself in a server room, and lo and behold... there stood the old server, chugging along. The fans rattled like hell though. I checked the web address right now, and yep.. it is still up. :)

You know what the time is? Sounds a lot like 6000 days as well. I just hope the server doesn't do anything important now and isn't connected to the internet

Since it is a VPS and is facing the internet. I will reboot :)

I've got one of those old Asus Netbooks that I've converted to a small server.

Been running for a few months now. I think I'll use this one for my world record run  :p
