HP D4950
« on: Sun, 18 October 2015, 06:36:24 »
I've come across this keyboard in a nook at my work.
But i've been able to find very little about it online.
I was wondering whether anyone could enlighten me about it

An HP D4950BR is a fairly standard membrane NetServer keyboard.  NetServer was HP's line of x86 servers, so I'm guessing it's just a standard membrane PC keyboard.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

How does it feel?  Can you post a full shot of the underside of it?  It has some signs of being a keytronic design.

The FCCID also indicates Keytronic.  If I can see the underside, I can be reasonably certain it's a keytronic.

I can't plug it into the pc it has what looks to be a din connector.
I'm currently tracking down the owner or the director of the department that bought it to let have/buy it.
I'll post more pics if my quest succeeds.

That should be a ps2 connector.  You can use a simple ps2-usb adapter to connect it to any modern day system.

After looking at the missing keycap on the bottom photo, I'm almost 100% that's a keytronic--the leds, the blank panel, the raised bezel, the look of the area with the missing switch.  If I could only see the feet and the rest of the bottom, I would be 100%.

Alright i got one of em home after tracking down the manager who owns the damn things and getting his approval, haaa the delightful bureaucracy of big companies. Got only one even though they arent using any but lets not get greedy.
Anyhow what i wanted to comment is that this thing feels pretty damn tactile for a membrane keyboard. Once i get a PS2 to USB converter i'll plug it in and give it a more thorough feel. Can anyone explain this or am i just overstating it?

I have added the pic SamirD asked for + a part of my foot for good measure it seems.
Also i cant believe i didnt recognise the PS2 connecter all that nerd-cred gone  :D

Older rubber dome keyboards often feel better than the cheap ones from China today.

If you're looking for a PS/2 to USB adaptor, I can recommend these: http://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/usb-to-ps2-serial-multimode-adapter

I've had good results getting all sorts of old keyboards working on a Mac, so I reckon they'd work with most keyboards.

There's quite a few around, different ones I mean, and from different outlets.

I think I got mine from Geekhackers.org, although AFAIK they are currently on hiatus.

Those feet are typical Keytronic design.  :thumb: Even though it's a rubber dome, it will feel like a really, really nice rubber dome.  Congrats on the score!  Enjoy it once you get that ps2-usb converter.
