topre o-rings to silence the upstroke
« on: Sat, 06 August 2016, 12:52:28 »
I know that there is the landing pad mod (to reduce the thickness it must be ironed though).
I wonder instead what o-rings you use. Someone says that the o-rings mod isn't very good, because they can roll and move thus preventing the key from going upwards.
It's quite common consensus that they must be quite thin, in order to reduce key-chatter.

The sliders on the NovaTouch are 7mm in diameter.

The inside clearance of the underside of the NovaTouch at the smallest clearance is 13mm.

I was using o-rings as silencers that were 1/16" thick. That was much too thick, so I would reccomend using something here that's 0.4mm-0.9mm thick. I had major ghosting issues.

Conclusion for best results with silencers:

7mm inside diameter

12.5mm outside diameter (maximum)

0.4mm - 0.9mm thickness

I wonder if these washers o-rings can be considered adequate, or if it's better to get the dental bands

I know that there are these o-rings, but they are quite expensive.

landing pads and o-rings are for MX. For Topre:

EDIT: I just now saw the last link in your post. Those are not o-rings, and they are the right stuff. Regular O-rings are too thick.

They might fit but I don't know how effective at silencing they'll be. The trick is to have something which is very thin (so you don't goof up the stroke and the feel) and which will also do the silencing. Finding a material like that isn't easy and apparently it's expensive stuff.

it seems that the diameter of the stem for topre was wrong, and that the correct one is 8.4mm for novatouch, and 8.2mm for some other variants of topre

Buy a silenced board like the hhkb type s. Realforce usually have s at the end of the model for silenced sliders. The sliders are purple but are not mx compatible like the Novatouch.

Is there anyone who can kindly confirm what is the diameter of the stem, and what is the maximum external diameter of an oring?

It should be 8.4mm internal and 12.5mm external....

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
