Keys flying off
« on: Sat, 03 June 2017, 20:23:01 »
So I have this here Asus ROG Claymore Core keyboard, which is a tenkeyless thing with Cherry MX Brown switches...

Some of the keycaps fly off if I flick them with too much excitement! For example, when I arrow down repeatedly, I left my finger slide off the key, which sends the key back up very quickly. After a few of those quick flicks of the key, the keycap flies off. :( It's not all the keys, just a few, but the down arrow is one of the worst offenders.

I thought about gluing the keycap onto the switch, but that seems too permanent, so I jammed some paper in the keycap hole. This seems to work, but it makes me a little sad that I had to do this.

My question is.. are keycaps flying off of the switch stem a common phenomenon? What's the best solution?

Buy a replacement set of caps. Yours are apparently out of spec.

I've never had a keycap fly off, ever.

Quick solution is to put a small square of Scotch tape on the stem and push the cap on

Strangest keycap issue I've read. The stem must have been molded very poorly.

Damned if I can find it right now, but there is a video on YouTube or somewhere showing a similar  problem Logitech. Might've been the new G Pro TKL, but the guy making the video showed how repeatedly striking a particular key would cause it to come loose and be catapulted off the switch.

Cheap OEM caps to blame?

Do you like that keyboard? If it were me I would just start saving for a new one.

But everyone has their preference  :thumb:

Not really the strangest thing, all of my keysets have slightly different fitment/tightness on the same board.

It is a little weird that a stock board has this issue though, but I guess jb's method of pressing the arrow is prone to making this happen.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

So it may be excessive pressure on the keycap at a certain angle... Damn, jb can't even ask for a refund in that case.
But even so, the plastic or the molding must be absolute s* to fly off...
And they have the gall to sell that thing. Incredible stuff.
