Go LaTex, but yeah OO is a steaming pile of crap.
I was asked to fix a bug for it when I worked at Xandros. I looked at the source for 2 hours, then went back to my manager and said no. The source code base is as mangled and confusing as the interface.
I have no problems with Microsoft Office, its just when companies start using it for things that it was never really designed for.
A good example is source code documentation in Excel (written by hand for a very large project). I nearly exploded when I saw it. I complained about it too, but they gave me a bunch of bull**** (that I'm sure they don't believe either).
And if your doing any serious accounting in Excel (home finances are not serious accounting), I pray for your soul when a real accountant/book keeper sees it.
Oh and don't get me started on people commiting Microsoft Office documents to source control servers (e.g. SVN, or the like). People deciding things like that, need to have their brain torn out and fed into a blender (figuratively speaking of course, as you don't want to have to decontaminate your blender or something
).
