LOL, so much for debating the facts. It sucks and I'm outta here. ;-)

I think we covered those:

-It's free
-It sucks
-Large corporations aren't going to jump on 'board
-It sucks
-99% of users are still going to use MS Office
-It sucks
-It doesn't have the enterprise-level support that MS can provide
-It sucks
-It's Java-based, slow and buggy
-It sucks

We can debate all day on quality OSS stuff like Firefox and Chrome, but OpenOffice is steaming pile of crap that is behind the times.  Maybe you can do your college papers on it or something, but the rest of us have real work to do.

Even by the 80s only computer science students and geeks used LaTeX at my university.

--
When I taught freshman composition, instructors could not REQUIRE student papers to be typed/word processed. So on the first day, I asked each class if they wanted me to hand-write my handouts and tests, or type/word processor them. They voted unanimously for "typed." I told them to do the same for me.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

NOPE - Not Christopher Reeve (you sick dude).  He was in a Jonathan Demme movie?

Not David Byrne either from "Stop Making Sense".

I stole this from Kishy's SIG.

That's one of the weirdest things I have ever seen... I hate things that don't make sense. Once in a lifetime??? And they need a better green screen.

Go LaTex, but yeah OO is a steaming pile of crap.

I was asked to fix a bug for it when I worked at Xandros. I looked at the source for 2 hours, then went back to my manager and said no. The source code base is as mangled and confusing as the interface.

I have no problems with Microsoft Office, its just when companies start using it for things that it was never really designed for.
A good example is source code documentation in Excel (written by hand for a very large project). I nearly exploded when I saw it. I complained about it too, but they gave me a bunch of bull**** (that I'm sure they don't believe either).
And if your doing any serious accounting in Excel (home finances are not serious accounting), I pray for your soul when a real accountant/book keeper sees it.

Oh and don't get me started on people commiting Microsoft Office documents to source control servers (e.g. SVN, or the like). People deciding things like that, need to have their brain torn out and fed into a blender (figuratively speaking of course, as you don't want to have to decontaminate your blender or something :P).

Please tell me that was an intentional reference to the concert film...

Oh, BTW, the choreography for that video was done by Toni Basil, of "Mickey" infamy...

It was the early 80s; that was about as good as it got.   Aren't you glad you don't live in those medieval times?

One of the greatest music videos ever made and someone on Geekhack of all places doesn't dig it for its retro appeal?  EIBM must be pulling our leg here.

David Byrne's dancing in this video basically made it ok for all of us kids in the 80's to be as weird as we wanted to be, plus it's a song that perfectly encapsulates every existential crisis that every person has had, whether they knew it was an existential crisis or not.

I think OO actually help selling MS office. It's so bad that when people seriously try it, they run away screaming and go into fetal position in the lap of MS.

I've tried. I'm a long-time linux user. I cannot honestly recommend OO to anyone.

The biggest problem I have with open source are the legions of rabid nutcases telling us that companies are evil for making a profit on software, everybody should share software, defending any flaws in the software and pushing it down everyone's throat as the "only way". It reminds me of communism. ¡Viva Fidel y Raul!

I choose my software based on whether or not it does what I need it to do. OOo doesn't have all the features I need, MS Office does, so I use MS Office (even though I have to pay). Firefox is exactly what I need in a web browser, IE is not, so I use Firefox (even though both are free). The "my software is better than your software" arguments are childish and petty. Apple started it, and immediately lost my respect as a serious computer manufacturer (although I will admit that some of the adverts were kind of amusing).

We recently had a new starter at our office; total open-source nut. I've been in the process of preparing a couple of databases to migrate from MS Access to SQL Server. Despite the fact we've got SQL Server 2005 running and functioning reliably with two other databases, 'Mr Open Source' believes that we should install MySQL on the server alongside MS SQL Server and use that, and he is now pushing the management to allow it. He's unwilling to even listen to the argument for MS SQL Server, because it's not open source. Douchebag.

This ignores the fact that some software is intrinsically worse than others, and that certain software is more like to offer the majority of users the most efficiency compared with others.
