Urgently need help with Model M repair!
« on: Mon, 26 February 2018, 22:01:31 »
Hey guys I'm trying to repair my Model M... My spacebar hammer is loose, does this mean I have to open up the board and seat it? I've tried seating the spring on the loose hammer and it doesn't buckle, it just becomes like a linear switch and I don't think it registers. Any suggestions on what to do? Thank you!

Are the bolts around the spacebar loose? At least you have the option of taking it apart and seating the flipper properly.

No nothing is loose as far as I am concerned... Is there anyway to fix water damage as well? A few keys are not registering and I believe it is because of water damage.

It sounds like it's had a tough time. Since it's already bolt modded, I'd recommend disassembling it, carefully washing and thoroughly drying everything (except the springs and electronics), then bolt it back up.

I should say too that you can get replacement membranes from Unicomp if yours is damaged. You just have to let them know the model number for your keyboard. You can also send the whole thing in for a repair/overhaul by Unicomp, but they may also "fix" the bolt mod by re-riveting the barrel plate.

What parts do you think were damaged in the water damage? Is it just a hammers/membranes? THanks

I'm not an expert, just guessing that if water penetrated the membrane it might need to be replaced. Other than that, probably just a risk of rusty springs.

Not unless it's been sitting underwater outside in the rain.   For a year.  It may need to be disassembled and wiped down but short term water exposure will not impact the membrane in any lasting way.   Might short the traces while it's in there, but cleaned up it should be fine.

Well, he said there was water damage. Maybe it was recovered by deep sea divers. ;p

If it's bolt modded, your bolts could be too tight and pinning the hammer between the rubber sheet and the barrel plate and preventing it from pivoting. I'd loosen up a few of the bolts in the general area of the problem and see if that improves things.
