Looking fo advice on my first build.
« on: Sun, 16 August 2020, 10:53:37 »
Hi! I currently own a drop alt, with Rosélios / Sakurios lubed by myself. It was a great experience and I think its time for me to build a full custom. My main goal for this build is silence and buttery feeling. I have decided to go with the silent alpacas lubed with 205g0 once they are back in stock(unless you guys could recommend a switch which is as silent and buttery as this one).

My issue comes with PCB, case, and plate. Since I own an alt, I haven't got any experience on the topic, though I have researched a bit, I guess what I am looking for is some help or recommendations on to what could fill my needs, taking in to account I want the most silent and buttery build as possible. I also want to dampen noice as much as possible.

I would prefer to be a hot-swappable PCB. because I really tend to give new switches a try and never know when I could decide to change. (If you can convince me otherwise, I have no problem in sodering, I never have done it on a keyboard, but done it to fix monitors and other stuff in the past, also need to look into buying a new quality kit for this).

Any feedback and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

No advice on any of the main questions, but if you do decide to solder, a $15 iron is more than sufficient for keyboards, you are not working with delicate electronics. No need to buy new gear.

I don't know a lot, and I am a beginner, having never built a mech before, but I have heard that band-aid modding your stabs can dampen noise quite a bit. Taeha Types has a vid on that here. https://youtu.be/cD5Zj-ZgMLA

Unfortunately I don't know enough about cases/pcbs etc. to answer your main question, but I'm sure someone will.

You never mentioned a size/format or price range.

You already have the ALT for switch testing, solder your next one. It's an investment, hot swap is not.
As for soldering, almost any iron can work for switches, it's one of the easiest things to solder. I've done it with dollar store irons, your setup will be fine.

For switches, I haven't used those, I can say Zilent V2 are dead silent but I have no idea how they compare. They are just as smooth as the Zealios V2 though, they're identical other than the dampening.

Anyhow, generic noise reduction tips.
Get some sponge/foam shelf liner and put it between the pcb and case, it helps.
As already recommended, Bandaid mod the stabs, stabs matter lesson a noisy board but on a silent one they will destroy it.

True. I mainly love 65%, but could also go with 60%. 550 is my budget, more or less.

Layout would probably would be ANSI.

Thanks for the dampening tips, will definitely bandaid mid the stabs and add some foam as well.

You're welcome.
Two days ago I would have said the KBDfans KBD67v2 but they just closed the pre-order. May want to wait for it to come back in stock, probably november or december but you probably can;t get it any sooner regardless. With that you could pick up a spare PCB as well (one solder, one hot swap)

It's a bad time to be buying high end custom keyboard parts unfortunately.

For my first custom keyboard which is also pretty silent I used lubed Aliaz 60g switches with a KBD75v2 case and matching case foam. Maybe you could check out the Aliaz 60g too if you look for silent tactile switches.
