looking for a specific keyboard, gaming-related
« on: Mon, 28 October 2013, 17:37:26 »
hey everyone!

i play sc2 at a pretty high level, ive been using a das for close to a year now (due to sponsorship obligations at first) and the keyboard has really grown on me. one of the advantages it has is that the ctrl key is really low so when i lay my hand on my desk the bottom part of my pinky doesnt press down on it, which is an issue ive been having with alot of other keyboards (cm storm, filco, realforce etc.). ctrl is used to hotkey stuff so i keep misshotkeying buildings/units because my finger keeps pressing down on it (force of habit due to my setup/posture T.T)

anywho i really love the feel of my das but as everyone knows its a full size keyboard, which i dislike alot because i cant position my mouse the way i want. im looking for a red/brown switch TKL keyboard that has a similarly low ctrl key, any suggestions?

much appreciated <3

Ooo, it's TT1. I agree on the aspect of the Das, as you can see in my profile is my current daily keyboard. I'll let the more experienced members give you guidance though.

Good luck in your search.

Idk if its cause the Das has a high bezel or what.  Maybe try some Cherry or DCS profile keycaps?  They are lower than OEM style.

dont think its keycap related, already tried switching them around but i had the same problem. das boards are just much flatter/lower than other boards

like right now i have my ring finger on 1, my pinky is on the side of caps lock and the bottom part of my pinky (inside my palm) is pressing down on ctrl, doesnt do that on my das
im currently using a cmstorm quickfire, i have the same issue w/ my realforce but to a lesser extent

Have you actually tried putting Cherry Profile keycaps on one of the other keyboards?  I think Das ones are still OEM profile (so a bit taller).  The lower cherry ones might help..

Or you can always take a CTRL key from a Cherry profile set and put it on there...it'll be a bit lower which may not work for you either but you can give it a shot..

If you put Cherry or DCS keycaps on those boards you will have an easier time.

Agree with MKULTRA, you can just grab caps with a lower profile and get a QFR. Alternatively, the Leopold FC700R has almost flat caps so maybe that might help if you wanted a keyboard that has decent stock keycaps so you wouldn't have to buy aftermarket caps.

do u know where i can find a reasonably priced cherry profile tkl set or just even the ctrl key? elitekeyboards's shipping cost to canada is way too expensive

also is the leopold FC200RT/AB similar to the FC700R shape/keycap-wise?

Yeah they're pretty similar in shape+cap.

WASDkeyboards sells a 1.25x key, so I'd take a look at that.

Are you sure TacticalStache? I thought that the FC700R caps were different from the rest of the Leopold line.

I have a FC700R and the keycaps are high quality thick PBT. I believe they are OEM profile but I have to wait til I get home to compare. Can anyone else confirm this? The spacebar is a weird spacing though, but I don't think that would be an issue for you.

If you think you'd like those caps you can always buy the full board, take the caps off and sell the guts to someone here on gh. I'm sure someone would have a use for it.

Best bet is to try the classifieds for someone getting rid of a Cherry set.

Yeah. Feng also sells cherry profile thick PBTs on his eBay (on eBay: geek_feng) but they are kinda pricey

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40704.0

They're very close to Cherry profile..in between would suggest they're actually somewhere close to the middle ground between OEM and Cherry..which probably isn't right at all..they're slightly different in shape but very close to Cherry profile...as far as picking a lower profile keycap, they'll do exactly what you want...

Yeah, only shipping would cost an arm and a leg to Canada.

An idea is to get a board with OEM keycaps and then replace the bottom row with Cherry profile, that'll make a huge difference.

If you want cheap Cherry profile set, go for KC104
What you describe, being able to touch the control key with the hand... it's not even possible for me to do unless I purposely keep my wrist on the table and bend my hand at a weird sharp angle. My main keyboard is GH60 with Cherry keycap. Perhaps you should look into Poker/Pure as they are most similar for readily available.
