2 Months Filco -> dead switch
« on: Fri, 03 June 2011, 13:13:07 »
Hello,

I recently (2 months ago) bought a Filco Majestouch with MX Browns from Army Group. Today the S key just died on me. I had it on PS/2, tried it with USB too but it does not seem to work. I am back on my cheapo MS rubberdome.

I didn't even use it that much cause i was really busy @ work.

What is the warranty on the Filcos'? Can I send it to the EU distributor or must I send it back to taiwan? Any ideas/suggestions ?

Thank you!

PS. Sorry if I have posted it in the wrong forum. Please move it if it is misplaced :)

Hmmm... I think this is one of the dangers of buying from a Taiwanese online reseller.  Sending it back would be spendy.   And unfortunately I don't know of a good online source of Cherry MX brown switches (mouser and digikey have large Minimum Order Quantities IIRC and mine are all used in my RipOmeter test keypad or I'd send you one).

Hmm is it easy replacing a switch? Removing the old one and soldering a new one in?
I guess it voids the warranty right?

ArmyGroup sells the switches individually , I guess I could order some from them.

Thanks for your help! I just sent a message to ArmyGroup, hope they understand English!
Will probably send an e-mail to diatec too tomorrow.

Couldn't he buy a used Compaq mx11800 and use the spring and stem from one of its switches?

What is the probability it is the switch and not a solder joint or other electrical failure? MX-switches seem pretty sturdy and repairable to me. If the option is to take it apart anyhow the OP might as well do that and investigate the problem further before trying to get a new switch

Any suggestions on how to get the switch out of the keyboard?

Yes, a PH2 screwdriver, a butter knife and a soldering iron. Honestly

I am an impatient man!

Opened up the keyboard, saw that one of the switch's pin was not soldered very well (it was a bit higher than the pcb, as if it was levitating). Unsoldered, resoldered, everything works like a charm.

I'm off the warranty (destroyed that beautiful white OK sticker) but I was too lazy sending the keyboard back to Taiwan anyway :P

Hopefully no other problems will occur, or if they do occur they can be easily fixed :)

Thanx all for your assistance :)
