Found Number Pad with ALPS
« on: Mon, 11 July 2011, 13:27:35 »
I found this Dell keypad (Model NL25-KP, PS/2 Connector) in my file cabinet the other day (I've been considering a tenkeyless board, but I do sometimes need tenkey) and it seems to be having a bit of trouble.  All the buttons are working, but a couple of them work too well... about every 15th striking of the 1, 4 and 5 keys produces multiples (two or three numerals for every keystroke).  With that being said, it could be just the PS/2 port, or some other factor.  As it is, I don't have any use for it, but am willing to send it to whoever wants it for $10+shipping.  You may want the keycaps or the ALPS (1 black, 20 yellow?) switches.  See pictures and, as always, don't hesitate to ask questions.

Interesting, I wonder if they put a stiffer black switch in there like a variable keyboard or if they just ran out of yellows that day :p

I have no idea.  I thought it was rather odd.
By the way, these have ALPS printed on them, for whatever that's worth.

That doesn't necessarily mean much in the ALPS world, these aren't any kind of ALPS I've ever heard of! =P

Am I on your ignore list?

Only answer if I am not for it could be a trap.
I was posting while you were posting, didn't see yours in time. :)

Here is some sample input.  I'll hit each key 1x per cycle... let's see what we get.

You could try to open up the switch and clean it or check the contacts for damage.

To be quite honest, all my boards have tenkey, so I don't really need this...
I figure if anybody out there could get some utility out of it (even if it's just for parts) it should be worth 10 bucks.  It would at least get it out of my closet.

It is on the 5 key though, so it's likely that it's there on purpose, to sort of reinforce the home key.

Do they have the same tabs and open in the same way as normal alps switches?

These appear to BE normal ALPS switches.  I'm no expert, and somebody with more knowledge may be able to tell from the photos, but they seem like normal ALPS to me.

Those sliders look nothing like normal alps. That's why I asked.

Hmm, it seems pretty borked to me. If you hold down the '/' key in aquakeytest, it will show you that key and the '/?' key in rapid succession. The enter key does nearly the same thing with both of them.

The way these switches actuate seems really finicky too, I'm not sure I can get the ones that are acting funny to work correctly.

*drool* Ahem. Sorry. Thats a very nice looking numpad in my opinion. Although I dont have a tenkeyless to use it with... but $10 plus shipping is tempting. GLWS:smile:

Oh, I've got it. That's why I was describing what it's doing. Half of the bad things it's doing seems like the firmware doing something stupid.
