1st Mech Keyboard Ever
« on: Fri, 14 October 2011, 22:45:56 »
So up to a couple months ive been researching heavily on which brands are well known and which ones arent. Ive narrowed it down to the 87u and a filco. But for the price they arent exactly in my budget so I was looking at cheaper companies such as das or ducky and I came up for das the Ultimate silent version and for the ducky i was intrigued by the 9008g2 model. For the price and its reputation isint that bad from what ive heard not like the 1008 the g2 seems to be built better so I went with the dk9008g2 Rabbit Limited which is a white on white keyboard plus its got brown switches. I like to game alot and I have pretty much never played with a mech keyboard I wouldnt know the difference. Currently im not playing anything that fast paced but I regulate from unreal tournament-quake and sometimes rts like red alert or even sc. I recently found a IBM kb-3923 its a membrane but its got a better feel than most of the membrane keyboards ive used current ones I have are the sidewinder x6,Fatal1ty scissor keyboard(idk what the name is exactly but its a ok keyboard)anyways...

 Topre - 87u,Filco - ninja,Das - Ultimate Silent,Ducky - 9008g2 rabbit,IBM - Model M

Theres others that I dont hear much about as for the switches ive narrowed it down to the best topre then brown and then red. Only problem is that I live in the us and i cant really try any keyboards myself and the ones I remember using a while back is the model m. Specially the topres since ive heard videos of them and heard good things but I CANT TRY THEM OUT MYSELF. So far ive tried the blackwidow which i hate cause it just looks so cheaply made and I really dont like blue switches. The one that intrigued me the most was probably the ducky since supposedly the 9008 models are up to standard with the filcos which is a big plus. The design of it is pretty unique and the price 132$ + 15 bucks shipping sounds like a good deal. I just need some thoughts, yes I am new and ive never had a membrane but for some reason ive grown to the sound of mech keyboards typing it was like a flashback plus theyre better keyboards overall.

yeah, Filco has ABS keycaps (gets shiny), but you can get some PBT later on... or pick a keyboard which comes with PBT stock. Ducky has it if I'm not mistaken.

Welcome to Geek Hack :)

Have you visited Newegg.com? The Rosewill RK9000 is a good deal for $99. It's unfortunate, but mechanical switches cost more to manufacture than rubber domes. As a general rule of thumb you're looking around $100 and up for a mechanical keyboard. If you're in the U.S., elitekeyboards.com have the Leopold for $109. Same designer as the Filco, same parts, arguably better key stabilizers, $50 less than a Filco. Or for another $10 you could of course order something completely custom form wasdkeyboards.com. The lowest you are going to find a Topre is in the $180-$200 range. I've had a variable weighted 86UB for around 3 weeks now, I'm very happy with it. The most noticeable differences between the 86 and newer 87 series are the 87's (moderately) quieter switches and LEDs in the ctrl/caps/scroll lock keys. Are LEDs and silencers really worth an extra $80? I'm not so sure.

Paragraphs, please... paragraphs!!

lol, but in all seriousness, I have a Das & Leopold, and if I could point you to something: unless you like the look of the das, I would probably get the leopold. The Leopold feels a little more sturdier than the Das, but all in all they're both great keyboards. Their main difference being looks & stabilizers. Though buying a used Das would probably save you some money if you could find one (and be a good intro keyboard), since people don't try too hardcore to collect them like they would filcos. Before you pick between these two though, just make sure to double check what kind of stabilizers you would like, cherry stabilizers like the Leopold or the Costar ones in Filcos & Das, etc.

The reason people don't like the cherry stabilizers is because, in my opinion, it takes away from the "mx switch" & tactile feel that the normal keys (I use MX Brown) have, in return for making the key much more stable than costar ones, thus complaints about it's "mushiness". It makes sense, since a lot of people buy mechanical keyboards for that mechanical switch feel, so in some sense it is pointless to reduce that level of interest. Personally I like both of them, and they both have their ups and downs.

If you play FPS more-so then RTS, I would look more into browns or reds (blacks if you don't mind using the keyboard solely for heavy gaming).

Rosewill RK-9000 has been treating me right these past few days, only $99 at newegg ( and a little more for Cherry reds.)  That's basically a Filco made board and would make for a fantastic entry into the mechanical keyboard world!  Fuzzy Dunlop already said this, but second his opinion.

Also, if you order before next weds I think they're throwing in a $20 gift card and free shipping.  Get on that, son!

LoL is my most played game at the moment. Probably till BF3 is here. Didnt try minecraft for quite some time tbh.

To talk about your keyboard:
I used a second hand cherry mx black from ebay that went for 10 bucks to me. After some time and money gathered, I bought a new Filco brown MX then. Because it was the only choice for brown MX here that is tenkeyless. No used ones. No browns. No tenkeyless.

If you have the possibility to get a (used) tenkeyless MX brown you will love it imho.

The used market is very big. People try switches all the time and sell the boards then. But not for MXbrown boards lol.
Filco is fine. But I would have picked up any 6KRO tenkeyless board with a good reputation. Good reputation for reselling it if I dont like it. Like Leopold, Ducky... dont ask me for the KRO at this boards. Filco was just the easiest to get and not much more expensive.

have fun while shopping ^^

edit PS: I would love to get my hands on an all 45g topre tenkeyless or even an HHKB. Used or new. But out of my reach for a looooong time. And the Layout of Realforce is more comfortable than HHKB imho.

Also , If you don't need Tenkeyless, You can always get a WASD with custom keycaps to really make it your own.  I love my WASD board , but I wish I had gotten browns instead of Blues.  AND I wish they offered Tenkeyless.   Hopefully when I'm ready to try reds they i will have TKL by then.

Really, I wish that WASD offered clear switches.  Wouldn't be any need to buy anything from anyone else in that case, just swap the spring and stem in the space bar switch for a grey one and you'd have a damn near perfect keyboard.
