Anyone else can't decide that if they like Red or Brown better?
« on: Thu, 09 August 2012, 22:44:15 »
So I had a Das Brown originally and recently purchased a Filco Red, so I brought the Das to work so I've been using it fairly evenly lately.

Initially I like Brown better for typing and Red better for gaming, but then somehow Red took over then I start to like it better for both.  But just recently probably because I use Brown a lot at work so I kind of start to like it better for typing again.

When I'm used to Red it's smooth like butter, but when I'm used to Brown then I start to make more typing mistake with Red (due to non-tactile, so it's a bit more unforgiving).

Anyone else also hovering on the fence between the two?

Very much so. I've only used Blues and Blacks, so I'm trying to decide if I should get Red or Brown next. I'm very conflicted about it.

lol I've had both for a month now and still can't decide.  Though one thing for sure is that even both use 45g springs, Red definitely feels lighter than Brown lol

I always made more mistakes with Red. Perhaps the activation force? is too low. i believe it was 45g for Red. Didn't like Red so i sold it.
I also had Filco Majestouch 2 Brown, i really really liked it but got DK Saver winkeyless with Cherry MX Clear(Tactile) 55g modified. Feels similar to Brown but more tactiled feeling.
So sold Brown too. I srsly have no idea why Cherry MX Red is considered as the gaming switch. I hated it so much.

Without dampeners, brown.

With dampeners, red.

I type fastest on dampened red, followed by dampened blues, browns, undampened blues, and then blacks in that order. Undampened reds are tough to type on.

Try a Topre 45g if you like the 45g cherry switches :P

IMHO, MX reds + o-ring dampeners = best overall keyboarding experience.
It just feels... precise.

O ring dampeners were the worst thing I've ever tried on a Cherry board. That feeling was almost the same as nails on a chalkboard to me.

Best typing has to be 45g Topre, best gaming, 55g Topre or Cherry Red

I've tried reds, blues, blacks, and both Topre 45 g uniform & Topre variable. I have not tried browns.

That said, I bought a HHKB Pro 2 w/ 45g topre switches for typing and playing SC2, while under the impression that its tactile bump would help me identify and confirm keystrokes. I was right, because I switched to a realforce w/ variable switches which had 35g keys on the lefthand side which felt, to me, nearly identical to reds. They were so soft and mushy that I kept pressing them on accident, and the tactile bump could hardly be felt at all that I was unsure whether I was registering a keystroke unless I was observing the bottom of my screen at all times. In short, I've been mistyping way more since switching to a variable board, and the experience has made me wary of reds and wanting to go back to a 45g Topre.

On the other hand I'm sure reds would be fine for FPS gaming as your keyboard hand is far less active than in RTS games. As for typing I cannot comment.
