White Key caps with transparent characters?
« on: Wed, 22 August 2012, 15:44:42 »
So, I'm using the xarmor-U9BL.  I have the idea of a white on black themed battle-station, seeing as how my case is the snow-white thermaltake level 10 gt.  I'm trying to find white key caps to throw on my keyboard, I've found many white keycaps with grey characters but I want the characters to be transparent so my back light feature can still be seen through the characters.  I've been searching for about half an hour to no avail, unfortunately I am not aware of the best place to search for keycaps.  I'm sure I can find the best dealers on this website, and I will continue looking.  Anyone happen to know where I can find specifically what I'm looking for?

i dont know if what you're looking for exists for 'normal' layouts, but you might look into a RACE LE with the white keycaps.

I'm looking for more of a snow white, thanks for the recommendation though.  It's starting to look like I may have to have them custom made.  Here's a cool picture of what I'm going for, except these are grey characters and not transparent:

Found it on overclock.

yeah -- keep in mind that nobody is going to make just one set of those for less than $500, and SP does not do doubleshots with clear legends.

SP does not do doubleshots with clear legends.

Any particular reason? I'm going to guess that the clear ABS plastic doesn't take nicely to the double shot process.

I would suspect that backlights would shine through the white of the key cap as well as the translucent lettering.  Most pics of white caps on a backlit keyboard I have seen exhibit this, even though the letters are not translucent, the key caps still seem to glow.

It can look kinda nice.

Reason SP won't do them is they do most all doubleshots with stripes if you look on the back. So there would be stripes running through the lettering. Of course this problem could be solved, but they are too lazy.

With good room lighting and low backlighting that would work well.  With dim or non-existant room lighting and bright backlights, you might get something more like:

But there again it would depend on how thick the caps were.

MAYBE, just solved my problem?  I wonder if the advertised "white keycaps without the keyboard" caps have transparent characters...is that the characteristic of all RACE keyboards?  This is a noobly question because I AM a noob and I can't find a straight answer:  My keyboard is the u9bl-s, which means mx cherry brown switches.  As I understand it, the key caps on this board are 'cylindrical' in style.  Are cylindrical key caps universal in size and shape?  I'm just wondering if there is a more specific classification of key cap that I have to buy in order for them to fit this keyboard.

the race has tons of odd-sized keys -- you wouldnt get everything you need to fill up your board if you got those.

@lysol -- that is the dumbest reason I've ever heard (from SP, not from you)... clear plastic would mean clear stripes which would be almost indiscernible when the backlighting is on.
