New Keyboard
« on: Tue, 02 October 2012, 14:02:18 »
I guess this is a dumb question, and I know that here are plenty threads about that.
– But I want to buy myself a second keyboard. At the moment I have the DasKeyboard with MX Blue.
Which keyboard would u recommend as a second one? – Whats worth a try?

Cheers

That's a tricky question with such little info!

Do you want a fullsize board? Tenkeyless? Even smaller?

Would you like backlit? Possibly switches heavier or lighter than blues? Go linear perhaps?

Hows your budget? Something pricey or cheap?

Yeah the best idea is to go to your local computer store and try the demo keyboards first, that way you have a rough idea what you might like.  Though if you come from blue, the 2nd board I'd probably go with brown or red.

My g/f liked red > blue > brown > black.

I like red = brown > blue > black.

Though red being linear is kind of love or hate for most people.  Brown is kinda like the safer choice, so depends if you want to gamble or not :P

Matias boards are also a modern implementation of alps inspired switches.  Great boards.

Budget is about 120 Euros, i definitely dont want to have black switches, and a full-size keyboard would be great.
Backlight isn't really necessary ;) but I dont care if the keyboard has one. I would like red or brown

The Problem with the local computer stores here in Germany is, that they don't have mechanical Keyboards, just
those awful Rubber-domes...

//Edit: Is there something louder than the blues? And which interesting systems do exist beside the Cherry MX?

If you want a click you can get the tactile pro version, and if you want silence but full tactility just follow this link http://www.matias.ca/quietpro/.

Dude ships internationally.  Great fullsized keyboards.

Nobody likes black switches :( My favorite.

If you want loud, look for a buckling spring. The ping is quite loud.

Have you tried looking around deskthority.net? I believe many of the folks there are in Europe. Odds are you could find a nice fullsize Cherry with brown switches for a good price.

I think the regular tactile pro is Mac only isn't it.  You didn't really state but if you use a PC I'd recommend buckling spring consider you want something louder than blue.  For buckling spring you can try to look for a used IBM model M from ebay or get it new from unicomp.

lol I've been thinking to give it a second shot recently.  I've only tried the demo boards in store but it felt a bit too heavy for typing.  I wonder if my opinion would change if I give it an extended periods to try it out.

Though at the moment I want to put PBT keycaps on my Filco then I want to try Topre next year, so I guess MX Blacks has to wait :(

Tactile Pro is not mac only.  It works on windows boxes so long as you use the drivers on the Matias.ca website.  Many people I know used a Tactile Pro with their PCs

It really doesn't matter because I am a Mac User ;) but I don't like the design of Tactile Pro ;)

What do you think about Rosewill?

Rosewill is best money for quality (full size anyway, and I believe they are on sale now) BUT there has been complaints about the mini B connector at the back getting loose because of weak solder points.

One guy on this forum took it open and apparently Rosewill has addressed it by putting hot glue on the connector in their new revisions.  So whether those hot glue holds up or not I'm not sure.  But if you know how to solder then it won't be an issue at all (I don't know about you but I've never tried =____=)
