Cherry G80-1800 question
« on: Mon, 31 December 2012, 18:13:01 »
Are these almost impossible to find nowadays?

I seem to be able to find G81-1800's, but unless I am wrong, those are Cherry MY, which, if I am not mistaken, are nothing like MX blacks. I've never (knowingly) used Cherry MY.

The MX switch G80-1800's come up on ebay (US) every once in a while, but usually are overpriced when they do. There was some 1865's on there for a while, but those are gone at the moment.

There are always plenty of junk MY switch G81-1800's on ebay, but unless those have double shots or a case for harvesting, they are worthless.

There are a couple US based online stores that have them at ok prices, and of course tons of them on Taobao.

Is there a specific model you are looking for? if there is someone, like maybe Lysol or myself could probably point you in the right direction.

How difficult are those green ones to come by, flynn? I think that's the next board I want to get.

Considering i've only found evidence of 2 or 3 more existing in the keyboard collecting world, i'd say at the moment just about impossible.

That may change in the future though and that is all i'm saying for now  ;)

If it does change in the future, I hope the future might notify me so that I may change with it. ;)

I don't know the specific model in terms of Cherry's model numbers, but I'd be looking for a 104-key USB model. I used to think I'd prefer the white one, but I've since come to the realization that color doesn't matter so much to me.

Thanks!

So for a USB model it would be a 1863/1865 that you would be looking for

There are a couple models of 1863 that came with double shot keycaps, but both are hard to find and will not come cheap. There is the white cased 1863HUMUS wNv or black cased Raptor Gaming K1. Expect to pay $200 or more for these models if you can even find someone willing to sell one

The 1865 is basically the same thing, except I haven't seen one ever with DS keys. Just lasered and also just black cases. Here is the cheapest i've been able to find an 1865 in the US and its also cheaper than importing one from Taobao:

If you didn't like the black case here, getting a beige or white or gray one from a g81-1800 model on ebay would be an option to swap cases with as they can be switched between all 18xx models.

Thanks! If I'm reading right, the 1865 that you linked is a Cherry brown. If I want cherry blacks, does that change the model number, or further reduce my odds?

Correct, the one I linked is Brown switches, which are the only ones officially available in the US.

Taobao has Blue & Red switch ones, not all of which appear to be authentic

To the best of my knowledge, a Black switch 1865 does not exist. A Red switch one would be closest option. Or Do a stem+spring swap on the Brown switch one.
