Steelseries 6gV2 Red Switch Problem
« on: Sun, 09 December 2012, 18:56:32 »
So I recently purchased a Steelseries 6gV2 Red Switch, and it worked great. However, I stupidly tried removing one of the switches without realizing that these switches are soldered. The switch looks fine, but I think I messed up the internal because I lifted it partially off of the board. Any suggestions on how to fix it??

I'm not sure if it's an internal problem. I'll try and switch it later this week.

Cherry MX switches can be disassembled (carefully) and reassembled, so it would depend on how much damage was done.

The only way to be completely sure it to replace the entire switch.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If I were to desolder the cherry mx switch, how would I resolder it back together?

I'm not sure if you damaged the PCB with ripping out the switch though...

I would, except i don't know how to take apart the 6gV2 apart. I removed the screws in the back but it's still stuck on the top and bottom. I don't want to just pry it open... All i could show you is the switch, which looks perfectly normal

The existing switch could be broken beyond reasonable repair.

You would need to replace it with a new switch (probably of the same type e.g. Cherry MX blue).

Is there such a thing as a keyboard that has cherry switches, but they are not soldered?

Maybe you're thinking of plate mounted switches where you can open them up without having to desolder them.

Is there a list somewhere of "keyboards with plate mounted switches which do not have to be unsoldered to open the switch and lube the spring"?

What is the name of such type of keyboard?

ezmod?
ezlube?
uberkewl?

The only way to open plate mounted switches without unsoldering every time is unsoldering all the switches once to replace the plate with a custom one and resolder them.
As far as I know there are no boards that come with a plate like that.

Opening up the keyboard is quite easy, just use a butter knife if you don't want to mess up your nails. I opened mine several times, i even have painted the plastic cover with white acrylic paint.

If you need to, i can upload a picture of where all clips are positioned.
