Fixed a busted M13.

Recently picked up an M13 that got damaged during shipping:



The trackpoint buttons took a hit but popped back together OK.  The keyboard works fine.  Some crazy glue, a few layers of paint, some wet sanding, and some texturing with the rattle can and:



All fixed!

Oh thank gods it was there. The M13 chassis is notoriously weak in that whole area. If it'd been the upper shell, yeah, nope. The part between the retaining clips on the lower shell that broke, well, yeah. Also pretty damn weak, though I'm not sure why.

Fantastic fix!  You can't tell it was even so much as scratched.

(Also I was rummaging to see if I could find genuine IBM Stealth Black touch up paint for rknize - fix that nice deserves the genuine article! Alas, I think I am out.)

Edit: Yes, there is in fact, genuine IBM Stealth Black touch up paint for ABS plastics and metals. It is 100% color correct as well. It was only shipped with select RS/6000's, primarily at the top end of things. Back when they were works of art to be admired as much as terrified of the power bills from.

... back in the day when someone would repair a good keyboard to keep using it, rather than treating them as rubberised disposable items.

Yeah, the case is weak there because they seem to add an overlay on the mold that scoops out a channel in the plastic for the flex cable from the buttons.  The crack started right at the seam there and spread out to either side.  I was lucky it was on the bottom and not the top.

Thanks for the offer for the paint.  This particular satin paint turned out to be a perfect match.  The crappy cell phone photo doesn't show the color that well.

Does the controller still work? Wasn't it the M13 that was plagued with bad capacitors on the controller?

Nope. Most M13 failures related to capacitor failure are actually due to heat. The M13's controller has a metallized heat shield over it and still scorches ABS. Remember that these were designed with around a 300mW envelope - the M5 just barely fit in there, but the M13 just completely trashed it. So they had to put a heat shield in. Which keeps heat in while dispersing it. You can see the problem there. I've never had any M13's with genuinely bad capacitors, just trashed ones.
