Should we have a wiki of keyboard measurements?
« on: Tue, 28 August 2012, 14:06:52 »
The purpose of this thread is not to make a case, or necessarily design one.  The goal it to put up a wiki page with the base measurements needed for anyone to make an enclosure for the most popular keyboards, and potentially current or upcoming DIY projects.  There has been interest in having some public CAD files for cases for a long time, but as people create them to produce cases for themselves, friends or to sell to the public, there is less of an incentive to post all of their hard work with the possibility that others may just copy it.  So, in the interest of building a body of knowledge similar to the key thickness/weights/comparisons that have been in our wiki for years, it seems like a logical extension to post PCB/plate dimensions, key spacing, etc, for various boards.

Types of measurements needed
* PCB dimensions
* Plate dimensions (if applicable)
* Key spacing
* Screw hole positions (for plate and PCB)
* Height tolerances (Highest/lowest point - like for the controller, and where it is positioned).

Ideas for measurements:
* Filco TKL
* Filco Full Size (below are SoulHunters measurements from a filco case)
  * http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Filco_Board_v.02.pdf
* PLU 87 (<- Found 'em)
*
Quote from: dux;464152
Plu Dimensions:
size of PCB 122 * 345 mm , one or 2 mm more would not be a problem
size of plate 128 * 349 mm, the 128 should be rather precise cut

distance between:
ESC and F1: 38 mm
F9 to Pause/Break : 119 mm
ESC and Pause/Break : 328.5 mm
Pause/Break and Right Arrow: 104 mm
Distance between all the holes on the PCB for the supporting posts on the bottom of the keyboard case

I measuerd all holes from the middle of the hole.
All upper holes have the distance of 22.5mm from the upper edge of the PCB.
The distances of the upper 3 holes from left (CapsLock side) to the right side are:
left edge to 1st hole: 56mm, 1st hole to 2nd hole: 115.5mm, 2nd hole to the 3rd hole: 115.5mm, 3rd hole to the right edge: 58.5mm.

Lower right (CapsLock Side) hole: 13mm to the bottom edge, 58.5mm to the right edge.
Lower left hole: 36mm to the left edge, 37.5mm to the bottom edge.

This is quite a bit more complicated than it sounds, and may eventually require CAD models of the internals of different boards rather than a set of measurements, but I think it something that a lot of people would like to see.

Do you think it can be done?  Do you want it to be done?  Discuss!

I know plate designs are floating around the Phantom/Phantom round 2/GH60 thread, ask there if they can be put up in the public domain

It's a good idea! It could surely save people a lot of time.
To expand on such a database, people could also share templates for their cases if they wanted, it would give a lot of ideas to the community!

There is such a thing over at DT, just fyi. Not that many have shared their designs though.

That doesn't surprise me personally, I don't know how many people actually do, but if they could make money selling their case, then why share the design or template? :(

For the community? My goal hasn't been to make money, which is why I release mine.

If nothing else, people could still release them once they have finished making them if they do a run and don't intend to make any more.

I can take some measurements of my CMstorm, if you think it'd be useful.

(Spoiler alert, they moved the middle standoff a little, to make room for the USB inlet)

Let me volunteer to take any measurements requested with a dial caliper-- I got a decent one a few weeks ago for my birthday cause I've wanted to have one around, but then found that I haven't needed it for much recently :P

I really need to get one of those.  I've had one marked on my amazon wishlist for over a year.  Have a look at soulhunters drawing above.  Its from a full size filco.  Not sure if the TKL has the same plate thickness or not (I assume it dose, but I only have a full size).  And the PCB thickness would be helpful tool.

I have a high end caliper too but nothing to take measurements on.

Actually making a case in cad is real fast once you have them. For reference, here is a case made in about ten minutes: http://imgur.com/a/Xao9t
It is basically all straight lines and no complicated shapes, just extrusions.

I know this is a REALLY old thread but was hoping to see if anyone had gone through with this at least for the phantom?  I was planning on making my own case for mine and was just hoping to get some reference numbers to start with.  Was planning on making it with carbon steel keystock and milling it down to the shape I want as I have a friend with a fab shop and an older non digital Bridgeport vertical mill.
