Realforce 87U Silent, should I sell it?
« on: Mon, 08 July 2013, 13:19:51 »
I just, (two days ago), got a black RF 87U (silent) keyboard in the mail.  I got this with the intent to bring it to the office, since it is silent.  My problem is that I think it is just too light for me now.  I've been typing on the 55g for a while now, so my fingers want to press harder.

Should I sell it?  Can I recoup near what I paid for it?

Before you sell it, use it a bit longer...

:(. Yes definitely recommend you use it a bit longer.

As suggested, try it for a bit longer.  If you're not used to Topre at all, most people suggest using it for a week or two to get used to the difference.

If, after that, you still want to sell it, you should be able to recoup most of what you paid for it (especially if it is a silenced one).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I LOVE my 55g, but I never really felt the same love for my 45g Realforce.  You can use it longer, but if you really enjoy mashing your keys like I do, you won't get used to it.

+1 for that! Should be a relatively easy swap if it's another 87u.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  I'm still gonna give it about two weeks before I sell it though.

Has anyone tried the Hipro?

Give the variable a chance..it sucks for gaming IMO but your pinky fingers will really like how it feels to type on it...You'll notice it when you go back to other keyboards and realize how much more work your pinky fingers have to do....

I still have mixed feelings about it..I wish it was a little bit heavier but overall it is a really good idea....Assuming you actually type with reasonably good form...if you're a 3 finger in each hand typer, etc...it probably won't make sense at all..

IMO the topre silent 87u variable is the best keyboards from topre. It takes getting used to. I didn't like mine at first but over time it has really grown on me and my pinkys. The only other board I will ever consider will be a variable weight ergodox, red and browns mainly. Better yet variable topre ergodox.... one can dream of the impossible and improbable  :p

The fc660 is nice and crisp with a very pronounced thock.

For me the upper threshold is 45g for the alpha cluster.

This is making me wonder if I could cleanly rob the 45g domes from my FC660C and throw them into my Type S to make it a mainly uniform 45. Hmmm.

That should be very easily done.

I dug into it a bit and it appears that while the 660C has a bunch of different dome sheets, the RF's have one connected sheet, and I don't wish to cut and paste :/
