Is my HHKB Pro 2 case defective?
« on: Wed, 17 July 2013, 11:30:55 »
Good evening gents,

I received my HHKB Pro 2 (White) yesterday from Amazon JP and so far everything seemed great except that I noticed that there are some minor dents/markings on the lower edge of the case where the space bar is at and also on the back case of the HHKB. I have attached 3 photos to show where the markings are at.

From the looks of it the markings/dents feel very minor to the touch. I can barely feel it and it seems consistent as if it was intended, so I thought I would ask if this is normal for all HHKB Pro 2?

I'm loving the Topre's so far over my Filco's (MX Red and Brown) but a bit concerned about the markings.

Appreciate any insight regarding about this.

Thanks!

I wouldn't say it's normal but it is most likely common. Warping like that takes place when the plastic cools. Technically it is defective, but it's nothing that will hurt performance.

It's a cosmetic defect.  If it was mine, I'd probably get it replaced/repaired considering how much it costs, but it won't affect the functionality of it.

It's just cosmetic, mine has a little dip above the 7 key on the top housing. Probably from the molding process. Mine (black version) has the same on the back as yours. It looks very minor to me I would keep it but if it bothers you RMA it. Also you have to deal with shipping costs and the turnaround time for another. Also most people tend to really scrutinize their purchase because of the high price paid.

The cosmetic issue seems to be normal for HHKB unfortunately. Mine all have this markings.
You don't need to concern about this but this might make you disappointed a bit.

^ I think that's the largest HHKB collection I have seen ;)

I would say that I'm a bit disappointed in regards to the cosmetic portion. I would think that paying premium for a keyboard that is "Made in Japan" would result in at least a flawless product or at least how it's meant to look like, but the small factor, layout, and topre has been an absolute dream to type on and I don't think I can ever go back to typing on cherries.

Thank you Hasu, at least it's a bit of relief that it's rather common for the defects. Though, you would think that PFU would have quality control over these issues.

I definitely won't be returning it as it's only a minor cosmetic issue, while the rest of the keyboard is flawless and the fact that I would need to pay extra for shipping it both ways since it was bought through a forwarding service and I know I will most likely be charged with customs again when it finally arrives back to my place.

Only other problem I see is if I decide to trade it or sell it as some people really do mind the minor cosmetic flaw.

Anyway, thanks for the responses guys :D

vel.

FWIW my HHKB 2 Pro has the same bumps.  I hadn't noticed before.

As does my black case, and I also never noticed before. While not as visible on the flat black, when I run my finger across the edge I can feel the uneveness. As stated, it is due to the process, the shrinkage of the plastic while cooling in the mold. I would guess there is a boss or something at the "high", or thicker areas, and they cool at a different rate than the thinner areas.

Even my Unicomps are not warped like that but I must say my HHKB (black) doesn't have visible warps.

You already know this thread is here, it is only a matter of time before you look.
