Idiosyncratic key layout, something weird going on around the number pad area, but I kept going back to pictures of the case. Aluminum. Badass.

Not exactly, not cherry switches but it uses the same stem shape as cherry mx. Check the deskauthority wiki link posted above.

It's a possibility, but I was just looking at the specs on that military-grade hardware. 3.38 kg. Each.

2. Marquardt switches do not age all that well, ive proxied several of these keyboards for people and some had worn out switches.

I've tried my share of marquardt switches on several keyboards (HEROS, MiniErgo, and a NIB Marquardt compact TKL with dyesubs) and they are not that great.
They are a bit of a mix of MX Black and MX Brown, a scratchier, less smooth linear switch. Though they are enjoyable, I suggest you really think this purchase and the shipping costs over...it would suck to end up with a 3.5kg brick that you do not enjoy using.

On a positive note the HEROS keyboard can be easily converted to a ps2 plug, you just need to solder the correct pins off the DSUB plug and attach them to a ps2 plug.

So, what's the consensus? Go for it? Get a shipping quote first?

Edit: I have another package of keyboards inbound from Germany, the shipping was 34,00 EUR with DHL. This is for a flat-rate box up to 5kg. Unfortunately for the Hero boards, that would mean one board per, maybe cram a cheap G80-1800 in as well.

Edit2: Well, I'm going to get one of these, see how massive they are IRL. There's at least one ad on eBay.de for the entire military computer+case+keyboard, it looks like the world's largest Dolch test set:

Apparently (idk if you guys got that translated) these keyboards were used for computer systems in headquarters or even computer based weapon systems (think of artillery, rockets and AA). Interesting.

Looking at the photos, it appears it might be possible to replace the PCB with one of a G80-3000. At the least it appears the spacing between key sections is the same. Even if a new plate needed to be cut it might be worth a go if the Marquardts suck to salvage the nice metal cases.

That would make a nice backup plan! I'm crossing my fingers that the units I've got on the way aren't in too bad shape. [Kind of a crap-shoot with military surplus stuff. Either it's practically brand new and never used, or it's beat all to hell.] The description of Marquardt switches as being a cross between Cherry MX Brown and MX Black is kind of appealing, I like both of these switch types, but the possibility of building a nice G80 with MX Whites or Greens in this aluminum case is tempting. $:-\$

Yes that is typically the case with military items. Either it was warehoused and never used and is being sold because they no longer use that model, or it was from the field and was pulled because 'no longer serviceable'. Even if the keyboard is in poor condition, the metal cases should still be refinishable even in the worst of case.

I'll let you know once I have one to take apart. I don't think I have a G80-3000 to try, only G80-1501 and G80-1800, but I can measure the inside dimensions.

got me one of those also and I'm curious what the GH- audience will say. I bought it only to see the doubleshots and they're really... strange. thin caps but they feel nice and mine are in perfect condition. I'm not into changing pcb from one board to another so I can't say anything about that G80 thing.

I am mildly interested in attempting to design a custom PCB for it. It would be based on one of the 87-key PCB layouts floating around since I cannot find one for a full size board.

Marquart caps look like SP caps. Your TA dyesub seems to be smaller than the Cherry doubleshot. How odd, my TA dyesubs are the same size as Cherry doubleshot.

Oh, I noticed that before but I think that special micro key is a bit smaller than the others?! to check that I took 2 letter keys and again the "micro" key hoping it's not that extreme- I think pics 3 and 4 on which I stacked them up to see the difference show that that micro key really is a lil bit smaller (or is it me that wants to see it that way?):

EDIT: What I forgot: The TA Dyesubs are really great as they reduce the sound really really good compared to the original caps of my pure.
