This OS in a nutshell. Just installed Windows 8 and everything is a permissions window, even on an admin account and after disabling UAC.

I swear it's conspiring against me.

I normally use OSX for internet-related things and XP for graphic-related tasks. Bought Windows 8 as I figured it's the latest version, but boy, there's literally no true admin account anymore.

The font rendering is atrocious too, but I found MacType which makes it acceptable at least. I need to find a way to get full permissions as an admin on this OS...

Not sure what you need the higher permission for... but like for myself I often modify system files for UI tweaks and icon replacement, so I use this to give me the permissions over them.

I've had that happen to me a few times before.

Have you guys ever gotten that hilarious filename too long error - now you're screwed because you can't delete or rename it.

I've run Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on 4 different machines now. Never ever had this problem before.

If you want to run into it, you can do something simple like run from elevated cmd "powercfg -energy" which will create a report about your computers power configuration... which you can't even view in it's default saved location with the standard user permission.

that's expected behaviour - running an elevated command would expectedly output to a directory or file that requires elevated permissions.

Some permissions denied so far: simply editing a txt file in a Program Files folder, moving/copying files from networked drives to various folders (by far the most frustrating as W8 requires files to be moved elsewhere first), opening apps only to have them crash unexpectedly or to find out later they can't write to disk due to not being launched with 'Run as admin' (seriously, I am the admin), in addition to all the various superflous dialogs for simple things requiring admin authentication.

In XP and OSX there are none of these heavy-handed restrictions to the admin account. Having to take ownership of each individual file/folder I'd like to have full control over seems like a workaround to a bigger problem. Surely there's a better way...

You can run into same things in Windows 7... I know I often did at least with system files. The permissions setting in 8 really aren't any more aggressive in a bad way really. Personally I like that some things are more restricted, even though it can be a minor nuisance. It's much better than random applications going rouge and taking over things which is now somewhat harder to occur. 8 is trying to be a bit more like how linux works now on most distros with more locked down account permission... but they forgot to make a decent working sudo type of thing since true admin is disable by default on 8. Administrator level accounts are restricted, and regular user account is ultra restricted.
Most of time I don't have troubles running programs, but I generally don't run any older programs on my 8 machines. Had a few minor problems with a few games not being able to write save files and things until I fixed the folder permission to allow write to 'everyone'. A lot of those kind of problems wouldn't exist if they used the directories they should be... like the specific saved games directory not dumping saved games in %userdata% where they don't belong for example.

Well, I do not have any issue with Win 7 at all. I can do everything I want, with no issues. Why do you said it is crap?

Weird.  Never had a problem with Win 8...  I have heard some screwy stuff with admin accounts, but all the recent patches fixed it.
